Public Service Announcement: NAZIs and Socialists Are The Same Bunch of Idiots

The notion that Nazism was a “right-wing” ideology has been perpetuated by recent generations and is profoundly incorrect. The perverse rewriting of history obfuscates the true causes and consequences of the Nazis. It also dishonors the millions lost to the Holocaust. Worse, this kind of absolute ignorance of history is a sure path to repeating it.
In fact, most Americans don’t really understand who the Nazis were.
The Nazis were the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. They were demonstrably self-proclaimed socialists. In the words of Hitler himself from a speech in 1922:

“Whoever is prepared to make the national cause his own to such an extent that he knows no higher ideal than the welfare of the nation; whoever has understood our great national anthem, ‘Deutschland ueber Alles,’ to mean that nothing in the wide world surpasses in his eyes this Germany, people and land — that man is a Socialist.”

Hitler’s version of socialism was blended with racial hatred, xenophobia, nationalism and militarism. Extreme nationalism and militarism (Castro wore his military fatigues to his dying day) are tried and true methods employed by totalitarian governments engaged in demagogic control of a population.
Hitler’s “…no higher ideal than the welfare of the nation…” was the justification and method used to deprive citizens of their liberty and property and may go by another name: fascism. Fascism may exist under extreme “right-wing” or extreme “left-wing” regimes and simply means that the individual sacrifices everything to the centralized state.
The Nazi version of socialism was different from the usual pattern, which has led some to mistakenly assert that the Nazis were simply an authoritarian “right-wing” capitalist system. Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises, the Jewish economist was an eyewitness of the Nazi economic system through the 1930s. In his 1951 essay “Planned Chaos” he explains the Hitler’s version of socialism as a difference without a distinction:

“[In]the German or “Zwangswirtschaft” system [literally “compulsive economy”] The government tells the seeming entrepreneurs what and how to produce, at what prices and from whom to buy, at what prices and to whom to sell. The government decrees at what wages labor should work and to whom and under what terms the capitalists should entrust their funds. Market exchange is but a sham. As all prices wages and interest rates are fixed by the authority; they are prices wages and interest rates in appearance only…… This is socialism with the outward appearance of capitalism.”

To be clear, Nazism and Bolshevism were simply competing versions of socialism — nothing more. Both failed for the same reasons. Socialists start with “the good of the many” as the collectivist, altruistic justification for their cause but must deprive citizens of their liberty and property by degrees because of successive inefficiencies and eventual failures imposed on market the system.

Christopher Westley, professor of Economics at Jackson State University, in his forward to the 2009 reprint of “Planned Chaos” said:

“[Market] interventions….taken to its logical extreme, result in the complete socialization of society, the necessity of a police state, and the repeal of the rule of law.”

And this is exactly what Hitler did with his “Enabling Acts of 1933,” giving Hitler unlimited, dictatorial power.
Friedrich Hayek, the Austrian economist and Nobel Laureate, dedicated a chapter in his famous 1943 book “The Road to Serfdom,” to “The Socialist Roots of Nazism,” in which he details the inevitability of the process of socialist control leading to totalitarianism.
If you still don’t believe that the Nazis were leftists, just read the 1920 Nazi manifesto, which is a list of demands called the “25 Points” which summarized their positions.

 “10. … No individual shall do any work that offends against the interest of the community to the benefit of all.” (All work must benefit the state. But who decides what is beneficial to the state?)
“11. That all unearned income, and all income that does not arise from work, be abolished.” (Investment and interest.)
“13. We demand the nationalization of all trusts.” (Venezuela nationalized vast parts of its economy.)
“16. We demand… the immediate communalization of large stores…” (See any socialist regime of the last century with empty store shelves and long lines of hopeless consumers)
“17. We demand … the enactment of a law to expropriate the owners without compensation, of any land needed for the common purpose.” (The destruction of right of personal property.)
“20… the State must assume the responsibility of organizing thoroughly the entire cultural system of the people.” (Music, art, literature controlled by the state.)
“23. We demand that there be a legal campaign against those who propagate deliberate political lies and disseminate them through the press” (No freedom of speech or press. Who decides what’s true?)
“25. In order to carry out this program we demand: the creation of a strong central authority in the State, the unconditional authority by the political central parliament of the whole” (Everything for and by the state)

And finally, the heading of point 25, “COMMON GOOD BEFORE INDIVIDUAL GOOD;” the very definition of socialist-collectivist thought and the exact opposite of a liberal democracy which exists in part to protect the individual against excesses of the state.
The historical fact is that socialism during the last 100 years has resulted in fascist control of populations far more often and in vastly greater magnitude than right-wing fascism, and has killed millions. One can easily name them, starting with Hitler’s Nazis and including the Soviet Union as well as China,  Cambodia,  North Korea, Cuba and countless banana republics (any nation with a  name including “The Peoples’ Republic Of…”).

Senator Elizabeth Warren shrilly denounced efforts to defund Planned Parenthood for trafficking in baby parts. "Do you have any idea what year it is?" she demanded. "Did you fall down, hit your head, and think you woke up in the 1950's or the 1890's?”

Warren ought to know. She used to be a Republican, then she hit her head and has been stuck in 1848 ever since. But to understand why some people might have a problem with her favorite racist mass murdering organization, let’s try a visit back to 1926 instead.

That was the year that the founder of Planned Parenthood stopped by the women’s branch of the KKK. This was the 1920s Klan which billed itself as a “progressive” organization invested in creating a “closer relationship between capital and labor”. An arm of the Democratic Party, some members of the KKK also belonged to the Socialist Party, much as Margaret Sanger, the speaker at the women’s Klan branch had.

The Klan’s political alliances with the Socialist Party in Oregon and Wisconsin had moved it closer to the left. The KKK platform echoed that of the first Socialist Congressman Victor L. Berger who firmly stated, “If we are ever to have socialism in America and Canada, we must keep them white man's countries.”

In rhetoric that should be familiar to Warren, the millionaire lawyer who made “income inequality” into her brand, the Klan warned that “increasing economic inequities threaten the very stability of society”.

If Warren ever recovers from that blow to her head, she can leave 1848 for 1926 and speak to the local branch of the KKK about income inequality and Planned Parenthood for the Socialist Master Race.

Aside from Socialism, the Klan and Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, shared a common interest in eugenics. The newly progressive Klu Klux Klan used eugenicists to cloak its ideas about race in respectable scientific clothing. The KKK had the populist manpower with a membership in the millions that elitist eugenicists needed. They made it seem modern. It made their ideas actionable.

And the Socialists were on board. Even Norman Thomas worried about the “alarming high birthrate of definitely inferior stock.”

For all her intellectual respectability, Sanger often sounded like a Klanswoman herself, writing of people as “biological waste” and warning that “we are paying for and even submitting to the dictates of an ever increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all”.

Sanger’s visit to the KKK was part of a larger and deeper alliance between respectable progressives and their ugly violently racist allies. The KKK lynched blacks. Sanger’s Birth Control Federation of America, an early version of Planned Parenthood, had the Negro Project which would keep them from being born.

“We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members,” Sanger wrote of the Negro Project.

Today the Klan is moribund, but Planned Parenthood is thriving thanks to government grants. The Negro Project has succeeded beyond Sanger’s wildest expectations by killing millions of black babies.

Maybe Senator Warren would like to read Sanger’s “What Every Girl Should Know” to her minority granddaughters? In it Sanger explains that, “The lower down in the scale of human development we go the less sexual control we find. It is said that the aboriginal Australian, the lowest known species of the human family, just a step higher than the chimpanzee in brain development, has so little sexual control that police authority alone prevents him from obtaining sexual satisfaction on the streets.”

Aside from black people, Sanger’s special focus was on two other favorite targets of the Klan; Jews and Italians.

“The Jewish people and Italian families , who are filling the insane asylums, who are filling the hospitals and filling our feeble-minded institutions, these are the ones the tax payers have to pay for the upkeep of," Sanger ranted to the New York State Assembly.

Jews and Italians at the time were sometimes not considered white. The KKK had developed a special obsession with Catholics. Sanger had lapsed into the bigoted language of her Klan friends.

Senator Warren might claim that all this history is stuck in the 20th century, but Sanger’s ideas explain why Planned Parenthood still exists. And it isn’t for any purpose as nice as “women’s health.”

These eugenics projects were being carried out in the service of Socialism. As Sanger wrote, “My purpose is not to depreciate the efforts of the Socialists aiming to create a new society.” Instead she warned that capitalism was dependent on a large supply of workers. Reduce the workers and you raise the wages. Kill enough babies and the ones who survive will have better leverage.

Or as she put it, in her creepy sexual conflation of Marxism and eugenics, “Uncontrolled sex has rendered the proletariat prostrate, the capitalist powerful.”

Reduce the increase of the population and you cripple capitalism. Growth slows down.  Wages will increase, but the cost of living will go up. The crash will come and with it the Socialist revolution. It worked in Europe. It’s working in the United States.

The Socialist Party, its labor allies and the KKK had targeted black workers in the West as a threat to union wages. Sanger was implementing her project on a much larger scale for the same reasons.

Senator Warren would like you to think that if such ideas existed, they were a product of the time and have long since been buried. But more recent recordings have shown Planned Parenthood’s willingness to accept money from racist donors specifically targeted at killing black babies.

Not in 1926. Today. Nor has the era of killing babies for left-wing causes come to an end.

Senator Elizabeth Warren voted for a budget which devoted over half a billion dollars to “family planning/reproductive health” worldwide especially in "areas where population growth threatens biodiversity or endangered species."

In plainer language, people had to be gotten rid of to protect the animals.

Behind the innocuous language, lurks Sanger’s old ideas about human beings as “biological waste” that threaten the achievement of left-wing policies. National Socialism may have taken eugenics to its logical extreme, but it remains an undercurrent in the ideas and policies of the Democratic Party and the left.

Some populations have to be culled, reduced, cut down, to make the world a better Socialist place.

Senator Warren mocks Republicans as backward reactionaries, but it’s her movement that was built on misshapen 19th century ideas which it still continues reliably vomiting up as trending topics. The left’s figurehead is Bernie Sanders, a rasping crazed Socialist, who stands in for Warren. The Planned Parenthood organization that Warren and Sanders defend was a way for the left to kill minority babies to make way for a bright Socialist future. That is still what Planned Parenthood does today.

The Democratic Party’s bleeding heart politicians have shown no compassion or horror at the mass murder of babies for profit revealed on the Planned Parenthood videos. But by Planned Parenthood’s standards, which include racial eugenics, what’s a little trafficking in baby parts?

Elizabeth Warren is as progressive as Margaret Sanger. The Democratic Party is as progressive as the KKK. The left is a deeply reactionary movement fixated on human crises that have to be met with totalitarian controls, convinced of the inferiority of the majority and its own superiority.

The Democratic Party remains an alliance between angry racist mobs and a sneering coterie of elitist left-wing intellectuals plotting out horrifying atrocities. It’s 2015, but for the left it will always be 1926.

If you question this administration or the progressive world view, you are the enemy, and the power of the government or the mob may be set upon you.

The debate over campaign contributions is never-ending for a simple reason: Both sides of the argument have merit.

On the one hand, of course money is speech. For most citizens, contributing to politicians or causes is the most effective way to augment and amplify speech with which they agree. The most disdainful dismissers of this argument are editorialists and incumbent politicians who — surprise! — already enjoy access to vast audiences and don’t particularly like their monopoly being invaded by the unwashed masses or the self-made plutocrat.

On the other hand, of course money is corrupting. The nation’s jails are well stocked with mayors, legislators, judges and the occasional governor who have exchanged favors for cash. However, there are lesser — and legal — forms of influence-peddling short of the outright quid pro quo. Campaign contributions are carefully calibrated to approach that line without crossing it. But money distorts. There is no denying the unfairness of big contributors buying access unavailable to the everyday citizen.

Hence the endless law-writing to restrict political contributions, invariably followed by multiple fixes to correct the inevitable loopholes. The result is a baffling mass of legislation administered by one cadre of experts and dodged by another.

For a long time, a simple finesse offered a rather elegant solution: no limits on giving — but with full disclosure.

Open the floodgates, and let the monies, big and small, check and balance each other. And let transparency be the safeguard against corruption. As long as you know who is giving what to whom, you can look for, find and, if necessary, prosecute corrupt connections between donor and receiver.

This used to be my position. No longer. I had not foreseen how donor lists would be used not to ferret out corruption but to pursue and persecute citizens with contrary views. Which corrupts the very idea of full disclosure.

It is now an invitation to the creation of enemies lists. Containing, for example, Brendan Eich, forced to resign as Mozilla CEO when it was disclosed that six years earlier he’d given $1,000 to support a referendum banning gay marriage. He was hardly the first. Activists compiled blacklists of donors to Proposition 8 and went after them. Indeed, shortly after the referendum passed, both the artistic director of the California Musical Theatre in Sacramento and the president of the Los Angeles Film Festival were hounded out of office.

by Dr. Susan BerryThere is a lot of talk, during these pre-presidential election days, of whether Republicans should stick to fiscal policy issues or include social issues as well in their platforms. Liberals are attacking fiscal/social conservatives, and some “establishment” Republicans are also criticizing their socially conservative colleagues, fearful that Independents will be turned off by the thought that Republicans are appearing rigid, strict, and hard.

Political strategy aside, however, what often strikes me about these debates, which always seem centered on how conservative Republicans are trying to force their social views on the nation, is that liberals do it all the time and are successful at it. Their belief that the government should take care of everyone, from birth till death, has permeated our national policies and slowly destroyed our economic stability.

Nowhere, in this most liberal of all administrations, is the forcing of liberal social ideology on the nation more clearly visible than in Obamacare, and in the person of Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), who will be the most powerful woman in the United States if Barack Obama is re-elected in 2012.

As many of us heard earlier in the month, the Obama administration has approved a recommendation from the Institute of Medicine that the new healthcare law guarantee full health insurance coverage for birth control, including the “morning after” pill. Beginning August 1, 2012, health insurance plans will be required to provide full coverage- without co-payment, co-insurance, or deductible- not only for contraception, but also for breast-feeding support and other services. Ms. Sebelius said, “I want to thank the Institute of Medicine for providing this important report recommending additional preventive services for women’s health and well-being. This report is historic.”

According to Ms. Sebelius:

“The Affordable Care Act helps stop health problems before they start…These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need.”

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) describes itself as “an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.” The IOM states that its mission is to serve as “adviser to the nation to improve health.” Apparently, it focuses on much more than just health.

The IOM’s recommendations for full health insurance coverage for birth control are contained in itsreport, Clinical Preventive Service for Women, in which the IOM states that it was “charged” by the DHHS to review “what preventive services are important to women’s health and well-being and then recommending which of these should be considered in the development of comprehensive guidelines.”

The IOM’s response: just about all services should be covered by Obamacare, including a “fuller range of contraceptive education, counseling, methods, and services, services for pregnant women…and screening and counseling for interpersonal and domestic violence.”

Below is a list of some of the IOM’s other, most recent, reports:

• Legal Strategies in Childhood Obesity Prevention, in which the IOM answers the question, “Could legal restrictions and regulations help combat childhood obesity?”

IOM’s answer is: more regulation.

• Medical Devices and the Public’s Health: The FDA 510(k) Clearance Process at 35 Years, a study which was requested by the FDA, an agency of DHHS, in which the conclusion drawn is that “FDA’s finite resources should be invested in developing an integrated premarket and postmarket regulatory framework.”

IOM’s conclusion is: more funding for more regulation.

• Learning What Works: Infrastructure Required for Comparative Effectiveness Research, in which the IOM bemoans the fact that “only a small fraction of health-related expenditures in the U.S. have been devoted to comparative effectiveness research,” and hopes that, with more funding, the nation’s healthcare system will be more “evidenced-based” and of “higher value.”

This will be a report that the president’s Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) will likely use as their bible to determine whether spending more money on the elderly’s healthcare is based on sound “evidence” that the money will be well spent, and of a high enough “value” for the rest of society. Here again: more funding for more regulation.

• A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases, in which the IOM calls upon DHHS to adopt its recommended national surveillance system.

More mandatory regulation for research.

• Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations, in which the IOM states it was “asked” by the Health Resources Services Administration and the California HealthCare Foundation to assess the current oral health care system and make “recommendations on ways to improve access to care for vulnerable and underserved populations.” The IOM’s recommendations: “incorporate oral health care into overall health care…and change how oral health care is financed and delivered.”

IOM’s answer is: more federal regulation so that oral healthcare is fully covered in the national insurance program.

The “independent” Institute of Medicine does not appear to be quite so “independent” after all. When we read the list of reports prepared by the IOM, it seems that many, if not most, of its “recommendations” have been incorporated into Obamacare, or set up as “guidelines” that become requirements for private health insurance providers. We might logically conclude from this relationship between IOM and the Obama administration that its directors will also be members of the “independent” IPAB and other such “panels.”

In fact, following the IOM’s recommendations on full birth control coverage and “other” preventive services for women, one member of the IOM panel, Dr. Anthony Lo Sosso of the University of Illinois, dissented to these very recommendations. Dr. Lo Sasso stated that IOM generated recommendations without engaging in sufficient time to fully review all the evidence before it, and that the decisions made by IOM were made based on politics, rather than science:

“The view of this dissent is that the committee process for evaluation of the evidence lacked transparency and was largely subject to the preferences of the committee’s composition. Troublingly, the process tended to result in a mix of objective and subjective determinations filtered through a lens of advocacy.”

With this self-professed “independent” research institute at her side, providing her with “medical” and “science” coverage, Kathleen Sebelius is fast on her way to becoming the most powerful woman in the nation, a realization that should urge members of Congress, the peoples’ representatives, to do everything possible to repeal and replace Obamacare before the legislation cannot be undone. A run of interference by the Supreme Court to declare the individual mandate “unconstitutional” is only an assist for the real operation- which Congress must perform- to cure us of this onerous legislation that will do to our healthcare system what has already been done to our economy.

According to Ms. Sebelius:

“The Affordable Care Act helps stop health problems before they start…These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need.”

Would those preventative health benefits also include 'End of Life' Counseling?

And how many women would even Want a child anyway, after being Gouged out of their eye teeth & into the street to Pay for this Pack of Socialist FRAUDS.

So what's next from our fearless leaders? A One Child policy?

Whether You like it or Not, ...... abortions, birth control etc, ...... have NO business being paid for by Government, ....... as they are NOT, unforeseeable, unavoidable medical developments.

They are the product of BEHAVIORS, and As Such, None of Government's business.

Carl Jung's face stares out from covers in every book shop that sells psychology, New Age, mythological or self-improvement titles. Sigmund Freud, fellow founder of the psychoanalytic movement, may have wooed intellectuals with his dark theories of infantile sexuality and the rampant id, but it is Jung who has cornered the middle-of-the-road self-improvement market. He is the Frank Sinatra of psychoanalysis - established, approachable, offering the comfort of myths and meaning in a mechanistic world.

For some time now the iconoclasts' hammers have been hard at work on the Freudian edifice - chipping away with the suggestion that he never cured anyone, that he made up most of his case histories, and that he is largely responsible for our current disastrous confusion over sexual abuse and recovered memories. No one, in the meantime, has laid a glove on Carl Jung - until now, that is.

According to a startling new book, The Jung Cult: Origins of a charismatic movement, Jung's theories are not the work of a brilliant mind exploring long-forgotten myths and returning with insights that can make us all whole. Instead, they were drawn from a well-frequented and rather murky intellectual spring - the "volkisch", or folk, movement that captivated hundreds of thousands of Jung's German contemporaries and formed one of the tributaries that fed into the Nazi ideology of the master race. "The current Jungian movement is, I would argue, completely unconscious of its roots," says the author of the book, Dr Richard Noll.

In his book, Noll concludes that Jung's greatest accomplishment may have been turning what probably amounted to a psychotic episode - he maintained he had been transformed into a lion-headed Greek god - into a technique for personal salvation, at the core of which resided an "Aryan inner Christ". Not only are the underpinnings of the theory dubious, says Noll, but Jung resorted to telling lies about the case history that provided crucial evidence for his theory of the Collective Unconscious, the case of the patient known as the Solar Phallus Man. "Jung is the most influential liar of the 20th century," declares Noll flatly. Not surprisingly, remarks like these have set the feathers flying in academia.

The row started nearly two years ago when, after much heart-searching, Princeton University Press, who have sole rights to Jung's works in English, published Noll's book in the United States. It was obvious the book would cause trouble. It begins by pointing out that the major source about Jung is still his "autobiography", Memories Dreams and Reflections - published in 1962 and still in print - which was largely the work of disciples and bears about as much relationship to the real Jung as the Gospels do to the historical Jesus.

The comparison is not accidental, for one of Noll's striking claims is that Jung set himself up as a cult leader, much in the style of Jesus and that he even identified with Jesus. The book paints a fascinating picture of intellectual life in fin de siecle Germany. Orthodox Christianity had been put under the microscope by theologians who were questioning central doctrines such as the virgin birth or the resurrection - scepticism that still has the power to shock a century later - and the result was a spiritual vacuum. Nietzsche had declared God dead and the intellectual air was thick with talk of the degeneration of the races and the need for some kind of renewal.

Jung was just one of many, Noll shows, who drew on the same Central European cauldron of neo-paganism, and Nietzschean, mystical, Volkisch utopianism that also spawned National Socialism. Noll, a one-time clinical psychologist with links to the Jungian establishment, is careful not to make a direct link between Jung and the rise of the Nazis. But he argues that such Jungian concepts as the need to rely on intuition rather than reason and the importance of an elite group of initiates also fed their poisonous mythology.

The Jungian establishment was outraged. Jung's son Franz declared the book "pure nonsense" and demanded that it be withdrawn. Princeton was in a tricky situation because, as one former employee explained, the Jung estate was a major money-spinner for them. It is a measure of their concern that several executives were dispatched to Switzerland and spent two days trying unsuccessfully to calm the Jung family.

Matters might have cooled and dwindled into an academic debate about evidence had not Noll fanned the flames in October 1994 by writing an article for the New York Times in the wake of the mass suicide of 53 members of the Order of the Solar Temple in Switzerland. "There is another story of a Swiss cult of middle class, sun-worshipping neo-pagans, led by a charismatic man who experienced himself to be Christ," Noll wrote. He went on to paint a picture of Jung's plans for world domination by a spiritual elite trained in Jungian analysis. The fate of the likes of David Koresh and his followers at Waco, Noll concluded, "reminds us all too vividly that sometimes these experiments can go badly wrong".

This was too much for the Jung estate, who refused to give their approval - as they were legally entitled to do - to the publication of a book of Jung's collected writings edited by Noll. That book was pulled and the rights to The Jung Cult were returned to the author. Noll had become too hot to handle.

A mark of the bitterness of the dispute came when the Jung estate took the extraordinary step of forbidding Noll access to a collection of papers held in the Library of Congress - again actually within their rights but totally against the spirit of the library. This related to the case history that Noll claimed Jung has lied about. Noll found that the case had actually been handled by another analyst and disciple, JJ Honegger, whose papers were held by the library.

The case is vitally important to the Jung edifice because the patient, known as the Solar Phallus Man, reported a vision of the sun with a phallus, supposedly a feature of the ancient pagan cult of Mithras. Since the patient couldn't have known about Mithras, Jung concluded, the image must have come from the collective unconscious, a sort of shared memory of the human race. Noll's claim, however, is that books and pamphlets on Mithras were widely available in Germany and that Jung in his writings changed their publication dates to show Solar Man couldn't have seen them. "The whole Jungian belief system will collapse if the collective unconscious is a fallacy," says Noll "If it is proved that Jung knowingly lied."

The Jung establishment has come out fighting. "Jung never claimed to be a god," declares Olivier Bernier, vice president of the CG Jung Foundation. "He made a plea for reintegration in the psychic structure of a recognition of the divine; the two are hardly the same." Aryeh Maidenbaum, director of the New York Centre for Jungian Studies is equally dismissive: "Accusing Jung, a man who was by nature extremely introverted, and strongly suspicious of groups - he was even opposed to group therapy - of being the leader of a cult is vicious and untrue."

Noll is sticking to his guns, however, and calls Jungian analysis a form of psychic pyramid selling - after six years' training and $100,000 you are ready to initiate others. And he has attracted some influential supporters. Someone who is even more suspicious of Jung and psychoanalysis as a whole is Frederick Crews, professor of English at University of California, Berkeley. Having penned several devastating attacks on Freud for the part he played in muddying the water over recovered memories, he makes an impressive case in a recent issue of the New York Review of Books for regarding Jung as an occultist on a par with Madam Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society.

At first sight they couldn't be more different. Blavatsky was a Russian emigre, uneducated but with enormous chutzpah who, between 1873, when she arrived in New York, and her death in 1891, dominated the fin de siecle New Age scene. Her Theosophical Society, still flourishing today, had a dash of almost every ingredient in the mystical cupboard - magic, alchemy, Neo-Platonism, the Kabbalah, the Tarot and communication with incarnate deities living in Tibet. Despite well-founded allegations of fraud and cheating, she attracted all sorts of prominent figures from Kandinsky and Mondrian to Nehru and Huxley.

Jung, on the other hand, was and is very much part of the medical psychiatric establishment. Yet as Crews shows, they fished in the same water and he concludes: "Jung was a far more committed occultist than Blavatsky herself. She slapped together her claims from published sources and faked her mediumistic feats. But Jung cultivated private visionary experiences and was inclined to believe that he had temporarily occupied the being of Jesus Christ himself. By comparison Theosophy's transcendental claims seems fairly modest."

Noll's book is part of a much larger debate about the very nature of psychotherapy and the reliability of the dreams and visions that it taps into. The Freudian brand, many believe, has led therapists to ignore the power of suggestion, leading to the scandal of unsupported allegations of incest against innocent parents. In the case of the Jungian approach the question is whether the far more baroque images those patients produce are anything more than a tribute to the richness of the human imagination.

Freud once wrote "I have not the courage to rise up before my fellow members as a prophet and I bow to the reproach that I can offer no consolation." It is Noll's charge that Jung did rise up as a prophet and that his popular success is precisely that he does offer consolation. Not that such solace is any longer available to Noll. "From now on I'm confining my researches to people without any living relatives" he declares.
