Newly discovered statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that were never released to the public strengthen the argument for guns and blow a hole in the gun control narrative. The statistics show that guns are used in a defensive manner against crimes far more than they are used by criminals to commit crimes.
A new report from Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck shows that recently unearthed surveys from the CDC, which were never made public, show that Americans use guns in millions of defense scenarios every year on average.

Reason reports:

... Kleck conducted the most thorough previously known survey data on the question in the 1990s. His study, which has been harshly disputed in pro-gun-control quarters, indicated that there were more than 2.2 million such defensive uses of guns (DGUs) in America a year.
Now Kleck has unearthed some lost CDC survey data on the question. The CDC essentially confirmed Kleck's results. But Kleck didn't know about that until now, because the CDC never reported what it found.
Kleck discovered that the CDC asked about defensive uses of guns in its Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) in 1996, 1997, and 1998.

The CDC survey, which Kleck described as "high-quality," asked respondents: “During the last 12 months, have you confronted another person with a firearm, even if you did not fire it, to protect yourself, your property, or someone else?”

Reason notes that the survey instructed respondents to leave out “incidents from occupations, like policing, where using firearms is part of the job” and it excludes instances where firearms were used in a defensive manner against animals.

One key point that Kleck noticed was that the only people who were asked that question were people who admitted to owning guns. This is a problem because Kleck found in his surveys that “79 percent of those who reported a DGU ‘had also reported a gun in their household at the time of the interview.’” Because of this, Kleck argues that the CDC's numbers needed to be rounded up, as Reason notes:

At any rate, Kleck downloaded the datasets for those three years and found that the "weighted percent who reported a DGU ... was 1.3% in 1996, 0.9% in 1997, 1.0% in 1998, and 1.07% in all three surveys combined."
Kleck figures if you do the adjustment upward he thinks necessary for those who had DGU incidents without personally owning a gun in the home at the time of the survey, and then the adjustment downward he thinks necessary because CDC didn't do detailed follow-ups to confirm the nature of the incident, you get 1.24 percent, a close match to his own 1.326 percent figure.
Kleck found the results to be astonishing as they strongly confirmed his prior work, which had been attacked by those pushing the gun control narrative:

The final adjusted prevalence of 1.24% therefore implies that in an average year during 1996–1998, 2.46 million U.S. adults used a gun for self-defense. This estimate, based on an enormous sample of 12,870 cases (unweighted) in a nationally representative sample, strongly confirms the 2.5 million past-12-months estimate obtained Kleck and Gertz (1995). .... CDC's results, then, imply that guns were used defensively by victims about 3.6 times as often as they were used offensively by criminals.

The newly discovered CDC surveys severely damage gun control narratives pushed by the media, including a poorly written piece last week by NPR's Samantha Raphelson, who just happened to be unaware of Kleck's discovery of the surveys. Raphelson's report backed the National Crime Victimization Survey's ultra-conservative lowball number of only 100,000 defensive uses of firearms per year.

Thank You Daily Wire, and Mr Kleck.

CDC Director Resigns After Her Stock Purchase Exposed

The head of the Centers for Disease Control abruptly resigned Wednesday after it was reported she purchased tobacco stocks while serving as one of the nation’s top public health officials.

"This morning Secretary [Alex] Azar accepted Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald’s resignation as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

"Dr. Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC Director. Due to the nature of these financial interests, Dr. Fitzgerald could not divest from them in a definitive time period."

"After advising Secretary Azar of both the status of the financial interests and the scope of her recusal, Dr. Fitzgerald tendered, and the Secretary accepted, her resignation," the statement added. "The Secretary thanks Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald for her service and wishes her the best in all her endeavors."

Fitzgerald had also invested in food and pharmaceutical companies while she was on the job. According to Politico, she bought shares in Merck, Bayer, U.S. Food Holding Company, Humana, and Japan Tobacco.

To make matters worse, Fitzgerald toured the agency’s Tobacco Laboratory, which researches the harmful effects of tobacco's chemicals in human health, just one day after purchasing the tobacco stock.

Fitzgerald, who declined to be interviewed for this story, has made tobacco efforts a focus of her public health career, despite owning stock in the industry. She listed tobacco cessation as one of her primary priorities while still serving in the Georgia position in February 2017.Prior to accepting the CDC position, she owned stock in five other tobacco companies: Reynolds American, British American Tobacco, Imperial Brands, Philip Morris International, and Altria Group Inc. — all legal under Georgia’s ethics rules. HHS did not respond to questions about why she invested in tobacco companies while working to reduce tobacco consumption. (Politico)

“It’s stunning,” Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, told Politico. “It sends two messages, both of which are deeply disturbing. First, it undermines the credibility of a public official when they argue that tobacco is the No. 1 preventable cause of disease. Second, and perhaps even worse, it indicates a public official is willing to put their personal profit above the ethics of investing in a company whose products cause so much harm.”HHS has tapped Anne Schuchat to serve as acting CDC director.

Dems Push For $60 Million for CDC To Study 'Epidemic of Gun Violence'

More of that 'Investing In The Future' nonsense. The Left wants taxpayers to cough up $60M to gin up reports which condemn not only the actual solution to a problem (the private Citizen ownership and carry of guns) but to further limit/eliminate a God Given - not Govt. given - Constitutional Right.

CNSNews;
By Eric Scheiner | June 8, 2015 | 3:02 PM EDT
(CNSNews.com) - Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation to authorize $60 million in taxpayer money to go to the Centers of

Disease Control (CDC) for research on gun violence prevention.
The measure, introduced last week, would give $10 million a year “for each of fiscal years 2016 through 2021 for the purpose of conducting or supporting research on firearms safety or gun violence prevention under the Public Health Service Act.”
“The epidemic of gun violence in America is not preordained, it is preventable,” Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass.) says in a press release. “In the 21st century, we should use research and advances in technology to our advantage and save lives from tragic and needless gun violence.”
“Some would have us believe that the laws currently on the books are sufficient to address the tens of thousands of gun related deaths that occur each year,” said Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.). “A few extremists even oppose basic public health research to help us understand why gun violence has reached epidemic proportions.”
According to the CDC onlineself-study course in Epidemiology, “Epidemic refers to an increase, often sudden, in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected in that population in that area.”
The course later notes, “the previous description of epidemics presumes only infectious agents, but non-infectious diseases such as diabetes and obesity exist in epidemic proportion in the U.S.”
Earlier this year President Obama included $10 million for gun violence research in the Department of Health and Human Services Fiscal Year 2016 budget request.

[Ed; Round up the usual suspects.]

Senators Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.), Kristen Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) are listed as co-sponsors of the Senate bill calling for the CDC research funding to study gun violence.

Experts Shocked To Learn That Centers For Disease Control Taking Drug Company Funding

The US government's Centers for Disease Control have been taking millions of dollars in drug company money in recent years, according to a news report in The British Medical Journal. Researchers in America and around the world expressed shock, and asked how the funding has been influencing CDC actions and decisions.
"The CDC Foundation raised $52m in fiscal year 2014, of which $12m was from corporations," reported The BMJ. "The CDC itself in fiscal year 2014 received $16m in conditional funding from sources such as corporations, individuals, and philanthropy, including the CDC Foundation. Conditional donations are earmarked for specific projects. For example, in 2012, Genentech earmarked $600,000 in donations to the CDC Foundation for CDC’s efforts to promote expanded testing and treatment of viral hepatitis. Genentech and its parent company, Roche, manufacture test kits and treatments for hepatitis C."
The article reviewed a number of other possible influences of private money on CDC activities.
Jerome R Hoffman, a methodologist and emeritus professor of medicine at UCLA, told The BMJ, “Most of us were shocked to learn the CDC takes funding from industry. Of course it is outrageous that industry apparently is allowed to punish the CDC if the agency conducts research that has the potential to cut into profits. But it was our government that made this very bad arrangement, so the way to fix it is not to ask the CDC to ‘pretty please be more ethical, and avoid conflicts of interest’; rather, as a society, we have to get the government to reject this devil’s bargain, by changing the rules so this can no longer happen.”

CDC: Wasted $1.6 Million On Tranny Beauty Pageant Group, & Promoted Criminal, Gay Prostitution In California?

frontpagemag;

October 13, 2014 by
Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Obama’s billionaire Democracy Alliance trolls have already decided how they’re going to divert attention from Obama’s botched Ebola response. Via Erica Payne’s Agenda Project Action Fund (the political consultant trolls behind Throw Granny Off a Cliff) is blaming Republican cuts.

Like rabid dogs in a butcher shop, Republicans have indiscriminately shredded everything in their path, including critical programs that could have dealt with the Ebola crisis before it reached our country
That’s from their press release. I’m pretty sure ordinary dogs in a butcher shop would also shred everything, but let’s pass on that.
In fact the CDC budget is at $6.6 billion. That money was wasted on assorted junk instead of being used to develop an available Ebola treatment.
CDC’s “Modest” $200,000 Fitness Center: Includes saunas, zero-gravity chairs, and “mood enhancing” light shows
The CDC-funded Stop AIDS Project of San Francisco, California hosted an event regarding “Men for Hire.” The featured speaker was Joseph Itiel, who, it was advertised, “presents practical tips and covers the seven guidelines for safe and friendly relations with escorts.” Mr. Itiel had authored a number of books, including A Consumer’s Guide to Male Hustlers
[Ed; California Penal Code on Prostitution, Straight or Gay.]

HHS and CDC sponsored an August 19-20, 2005, Utah conference hosted by the Harm Reduction Project and the Harm Reduction Coalition — organizations that support tacit legalization of drugs, including methamphetamine. Several sessions planned for the conference appear to promote illegal drug use and risky sexual behavior such as, “We Don’t Need a ‘War’ on Methamphetamine,” and “You Don’t Have to Be Clean & Sober. Or Even Want to Be!”
And let’s not forget this…
On May 12, 2001, the Mr./Ms. UTOPIA pageant entitled “Jewel of the Pacific” was held at the Southeast Community College Auditorium. U.T.O.P.I.A is The United Territories of Polynesian Islanders’ Alliance, a 501(c)(3) located in San Francisco, California. The organization was formed “to provide support to the Polynesian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community.” A flyer for the event notes “funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” and “Partial funding by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center.”
In 2001, the Center’s revenue was almost $3 million. In 2003, according to its website, its revenue was a little less than in 2001, but still near $3 million. While federal funding figures are unavailable for 2001, the group reports the federal government provided 38 percent of their 2003 budget, which would equal approximately a million dollars. In 2005, the federal government’s portion grew to 49 percent of its $3.366 million budget, or over $1.6 million.
Despite receiving millions of dollars from the federal government in the past few years, according to the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center’s website, in the last 17 years the organization only has “served over 600 HIV-positive A&PIs.”
The level of incompetence we’re seeing isn’t due to a lack of funding, but to government waste and incompetence by a fossilized bureaucracy that likes its saunas and its drag shows and doesn’t like doing its job.

Thank You Mr Greenfield, and frontpagemag.
And wouldn't you know it, it's Pelosi's play pen, Mental Health Ground Zero, San Francisco.

CDC: Center For Anything But Disease Control

In their 2014 budget, the CDC was given $7 Billion, a 200% increase over what they received in 2000. Congress actually gave more than requested by Obama, so don’t buy any of the “Republicans cut funding” nonsense talking points. Some of the fun things that the CDC is studying rather than disease:
[Ed; This piece is by Michelle Malkin, so read the whole thing.]
Via NY Post:
Mandatory motorcycle-helmet laws: CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden appoints a 15-member “Community Preventive Services Task Force” to promote pet Nanny State projects.
An obscure ObamaCare rule — Section 4003(b)(1) — stealthily increased the task force’s authority to study “any policies, programs, processes or activities designed to affect or otherwise affecting health at the population level.”
Last year, the meddling panel extended the agency’s reach into transportation safety with a call to impose a federal universal motorcycle-helmet law on the country.
Is riding a Harley a disease? Why is this the CDC’s business?
Video games and TV violence: At Obama’s behest, in the wake of high-profile school shootings, the CDC scored $10 million last year to study violent video games and media images, as well as to assess “existing strategies for preventing gun violence and identifying the most pressing research questions, with the greatest potential public-health impact.”
Whatever that means. Why is this the CDC’s business?
Playground equipment: The CDC’s “Injury Centers” (Did you know there are 13 of them?) have crafted a “national action plan” and funded countless studies to prevent boo-boos and accidents on the nation’s playgrounds.
Apparently, there aren’t enough teachers, parents, local school districts and county and state regulators to police the slides and seesaws. Why is this the CDC’s business?
“Social norming” in the schools: The CDC has funded studies and campaigns “promoting positive community norms” and “safe, stable, nurturing relationships” in homes and schools.

Thank You Ms Malkin, NY Post, and Nickarama.

Frieden was Commissioner of NYC's Dept. of Mental Hygiene.

The very term Mental Hygiene ought to set the small hairs on the back of your neck bristling.

Second Health Care Worker Contracts Ebola In Texas

And like the first nurse, she also tended to Thomas Eric Duncan.
Via ABC  News:
A second health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who tended to Thomas Eric Duncan as he died of Ebola has tested positive for the lethal virus and a hospital official said this morning that additional cases among the hospital’s health care workers is a “very real possibility.”
The unidentified health care worker reported a fever Tuesday and was isolated at the hospital, authorities said.
The preliminary Ebola test was run late Tuesday at the state public health laboratory in Austin, and results were received at about midnight, authorities said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has begun confirmation testing.
The woman was put into isolation within 90 minutes, a Texas health official said.
The hospital held a news conference this morning and a spokesman said this may not be the last case to be found among the hospital’s staff.
“We are preparing contingencies for more and that is a very real possibility,” he said.

Thank You Zip and ABC.

The Facts About Ebola Funding

The Democratic talking points have gone into high gear to try to pin Ebola problems on Republican budget cuts, to avoid any criticism of the failure of the Obama regime to properly respond to the dangers. They are quick at the blame game, not so quick at actually attending to the responsibilities to protect the American public.

In this article, Gov. Bobby Jindal puts paid to those Democratic arguments, noting how under Obama, this program, like many other departments and programs, has been diverted away from its primary purpose.
Yet another American has contracted Ebola, a grim reminder of just how important it is that our public health systems function at the highest possible level. Unfortunately, much of the rhetoric about this deadly disease is misleading, if not dishonest.
In a paid speech last week, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attempted to link spending restraints enacted by Congress—and signed into law by President Obama—to the fight against Ebola. Secretary Clinton claimed that the spending reductions mandated under sequestration “are really beginning to hurt,” citing the fight against Ebola: “The CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] is another example on the response to Ebola—they’re working heroically, but they don’t have the resources they used to have.”
Her argument, like those made by others, misses the point. In recent years, the CDC has received significant amounts of funding. Unfortunately, however, many of those funds have been diverted away from programs that can fight infectious diseases, and toward programs far afield from the CDC’s original purpose.
