Large Increase In Poison Control Calls for Children Taking ADHD Drugs

New data shows that calls to US poison control centers have increased significantly for children taking stimulant ADHD drugs.

New research published in the journal Pediatrics has found that calls to US poison control centers have increased significantly due to children taking ADHD stimulant medications, such as amphetamine (Adderall) and methylphenidate (Ritalin). The research was led by Gary Smith at the Center for Injury Research and Policy, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

    According to Smith, “In 2015, US poison control centers received >25800 calls involving exposures to amphetamine and methylphenidate, which are 2 medications used in the treatment of ADHD […] Stimulant medication overdoses can result in a variety of symptoms, including mydriasis, tremor, agitation, tachycardia, hyperreflexia, confusion, hallucinations, hyperthermia, and status epilepticus.”

The number of reported children inadvertently exposed to stimulant medications rose 71.2% between 2000 and 2011, before dropping slightly by 6.2% between 2011 and 2014. The researchers found that almost half (41.6%) of the exposures were due to unintentional therapeutic error, while another 39.6% were rated as accidental general exposure.

Most of the exposures for children younger than 5 were due to unintentional general exposure (for instance, they may have taken a sibling’s medication while playing), while most of the exposures for older children were due to therapeutic error (took a larger dose or more doses than prescribed, for instance). Intentional exposures were responsible for more than half (50.2%) of the calls for adolescents aged 13 to 19 years old (e.g., medication abuse and suicide attempts).

Twenty-eight percent of the calls involved documented clinical effects (such as drowsiness, irritability, tachycardia, and vomiting). In most cases, these effects were not serious, although 9.4% of the calls involved severe medical problems. The three reported deaths were all due to intentional exposures.

It is worth noting that this is an underestimate of the dangerous exposures to stimulant medications since not all exposures are reported to poison control centers.

“Unintentional and intentional pediatric exposures to ADHD medications are an increasing problem in the United States, affecting children of all ages,” the researchers write. “Exposures associated with suspected suicide or medication abuse and misuse among adolescents are of particular concern.”

U.N. Peacekeeping Forces Rampant Child Rape Problem Continues

These crimes are continuing in just about every country where U.N. peacekeeping forces are present, yet I haven’t heard of a single rapist being arrested, tried or convicted.

A Wednesday report by the Associated Press sheds further light on the extensive child rape problem that exists within the United Nations peacekeeping forces.

The expose focuses on U.N. peacekeepers operating in Haiti, where nearly 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse have occurred since 2004, with more than 300 cases involving children. A large number of the victims included boys and girls as young as 12 years old, many of whom were raped by peacekeepers on a regular basis.

“I did not even have breasts,” one girl, known as V01, or Victim No.1, told the AP. She said she was consistently raped by as many as 50 U.N. peacekeepers from ages 12 to 15.

Janila Jean was a 16-year-old virgin when a Brazilian peacekeeper lured her into a U.N. compound with some bread smeared with peanut butter. Once inside, he raped her at gunpoint. The attack left her pregnant, and she now raises her child alone.

“Some days, I imagine strangling my daughter to death,” she told investigators.

V09, a boy, said he was 15 when Sri Lankan peacekeepers began raping him. He reported having sexual encounters with more than 100 of them over three years, averaging approximately four a day.

A teenage boy told investigators that he was gang-raped by Uruguayan peacekeepers in 2011. The soldiers filmed the alleged rape on a cell phone.

Haiti is one of the poorest and most destitute countries in the western hemisphere. The country fell into chaos after former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide went into exile after an armed conflict ravaged the country. The U.N. began the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) shortly thereafter on June 1, 2004. Haiti again suffered disaster on Jan. 12, 2010 when an earthquake killed 220,000 people.

The desperation suffered by Haitians created an environment where sexual predators could easily bribe children into sexual acts with the equivalent of 75 cents or a cookie. In one case, Sri Lankan peacekeepers set up a sex ring involving nine children.

The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (JRC), a special needs day and residential school in Canton, has been widely criticized for its use of electric shocks on students.

In April, the FDA proposed banning "electrical stimulation devices used to treat self-injurious or aggressive behavior." The ban is specially aimed at JRC, the only facility left in the country using electric shock devices known as Graduated Electronic Decelerators, or GEDs.

Reports have ranged from students being shocked 10 times in a row due to an equipment malfunction to 31 times in a seven-hour period for breaking JRC rules. In 2008, JRC told Boston Magazine students were typically shocked just once a week. Then in 2010, Linda Doherty told ABC News her son was shocked 40 times one week and 18 times the next week.

Due to the wide range of reports, it's unknown how often students are shocked. JRC did not respond to requests for information on its practices.

As a hypothetical example, let's say a student is typically shocked an average of two times a week. From the FDA hearing in April 2014 to when the FDA proposed banning the devices, that student would've been shocked approximately 208 times.

After the proposed ban, there was a comment period until May 25. That's 10 more shocks.

The comment period was extended and will be available until July 25. Totalling approximately 234 shocks since the FDA had a hearing about the devices.

So why is the FDA taking so long to decide what course to take?

One reason is that this would only be the second time the FDA has passed a ban on a medical device. The first time was in 1983 for prosthetic hair fibers, which were scalp implantation devices to simulate natural hair. The FDA, however, found the devices did not work and could cause serious injury or illness.

They have also recently placed a proposed ban on Powdered Surgeon's Gloves, Powdered Patient Examination Gloves, and Absorbable Powder for Lubricating a Surgeon's Glove. Comments closed for this ban June 20, 2016.

Nancy Weiss, National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities director, said another reason might be the topic's complex nature.

On one hand, there are parents of children with severe disabilities who were taken in by JRC. Those parents are challenged greatly by keeping their children safe, be it from accidentally hurting themselves or others, balancing medication or finding a place in the public school system. JRC's method, they contend, is the last hope for their children.

On the other hand, there are advocates, former students and staff members and the families of students who say JRC's methods are harmful.

Weiss emphasized the importance of parents finding other methods and that the students at JRC aren't the only people "in this country that have significant behavioral issues."

"There are people in every state who have severely dangerous behaviors," she said, "and they're being treated effectively and humanely."

Weiss said she's worried because even though more people are sharing their personal experiences with JRC, "there's a lot we don't know."

If the ban doesn't pass, advocates say they aren't giving up. But many are also worried that JRC isn't planning ahead for if the ban does happen. Even if the FDA does decide to pass its ban on GEDs, advocates say their fight isn't over.

"JRC, as far as any of us are aware or could possibly suspect, are not preparing any transition," said Lydia Brown, chairperson of the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council.

Some students might leave JRC if the ban passes, Brown said, but others might stay, and what kind of therapy they'll be subjected to is unknown.

"For those remaining at the JRC, it's an open question," Brown said. "The JRC has been able to successfully evade oversight and monitoring for decades."

The suspension of second grader who chewed his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun was upheld by a circuit court judge last week.

Joshua Welch was suspended from Anne Arundel County’s Park Elementary in March 2013 after chewing his pastry into the shape of a gun and “[pretending] to fire it.” The student’s father, B.J. Welch, took the matter to court in hopes of having the suspension reversed and expunged from his son’s record.

But WJZ 13 reports that an Anne Arundel County circuit judge upheld the suspension, ruling that Joshua’s actions were “disruptive.”

Anne Arundel County Schools reacted to the ruling by releasing a statement which said, “We have believed from the outset that the actions of the school staff were not only appropriate and consistent, but in the best interests of all students.”

Welch family attorney Robin Ficker lamented the ruling and pointed out there was “no violence, no real weapon, no ammunition.” But the suspension will now “be on [Joshua’s] record in school… every time he goes into a new grade.”

A video published this week documenting the graduation ceremony of Islamic Jihad’s “cubs” program for children provides a look into the violent, anti-Israel teaching that prevails in many Gazan kindergartens, which are administered by Palestinian terror organizations.

On Sunday, the ‘Islamic Way Kindergarten’ in Gaza’s Zeitoun district held a graduation ceremony for dozens of children.

A seven-minute video of the event has documented the kindergarten pupils turning from innocent children to well-trained “cubs” demonstrating how to kill Israeli soldiers.

The filmed program begins with a military parade, in which a group of children march on stage, holding weapons, to the sound of jihadi anthems.

After the parade, the children purportedly carry out a demonstration of a complex attack against IDF soldiers. The children are seen dividing into groups that use different modes of operation to target Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Across Massachusetts – and across America – thousands of schoolchildren are given sexually graphic, psychologically intrusive surveys by the public schools without parents’ knowledge. These surveys also ask youth to reveal their criminal activity, personal family matters, and other intimate issues.

This is done in the public middle schools and high schools during school hours. At best, parents are told about the surveys in vague terms, but are rarely allowed read them beforehand. The surveys are “officially” anonymous and voluntary. But they are administered by the teacher in a classroom and (according to teachers we’ve talked to) there is often pressure for all kids to participate.

The major survey given to kids across America is the “Youth Risk Behavior Survey” put together every two years by the national Centers for Disease Control and handed off to state and local education departments (which they can modify). And there are many similar surveys administered in various districts.

Transgender children’s books, which address a topic once considered so taboo that no mainstream publisher would touch it, are gaining a wider audience thanks to a handful of authors and a few mainstream publishers willing to reach out to children struggling with gender identity, the New York Times is reporting.

Children’s literature has often been reluctant to take on taboo subjects — Judy Blume’s candid descriptions of menstruation and teen sexuality were considered scandalous in their day, according to NPR. But the children’s publishing industry has taken on a handful of difficult subjects in recent years, including rape, suicide, and sex trafficking. But the subject of gender identity in teens, adolescents, and children has gotten scant little attention.

David Levithan, vice president and publisher of Scholastic Press, says that publishers are now becoming willing to take on the subject of transgender children — however slowly.

“In our culture, it was really something that was in the shadows, but suddenly people are talking about it. As our culture is starting to acknowledge transgender people and acknowledge that they are a part of the fabric of who we are, literature is reflecting that.”

Much of the body of work in transgender children’s literature is aimed at teens and adolescents, according to SFGate. Sam Martin, a 43-year-old who has transitioned from female to male, will be releasing later this month a semi-autobiographical teen novel about a transgender teen boy who falls in love with another boy. Similarly, the memoir Rethinking Normal by Katie Rain Hill, about a transgender teen girl in Oklahoma who falls in love with another transgender teen girl, hit the shelves last year.

Antipsychotic Use On The Rise Among Australian Children

NEW YORK, Nov. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As Risperdal lawsuits (http://www.risperdallawsuit2014.com/) move forward in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that the use of antipsychotic drugs has risen significantly among children in Australia.  According to a report from the U.K.'s Daily Mail, more than 100,000 antipsychotic prescriptions were written for Australian children in 2013. Risperidone (sold in the U.S. under the brand name Risperdal) Quetiapine and Olanzapine were the three most commonly prescribed medicines. The report noted that the number of prescriptions greatly outpaced the number of Australian children who suffer from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic ailments, suggesting that many were receiving the medications off-label for unapproved indications.

"Hundreds of people in the U.S. are now pursuing Risperdal lawsuits for gynecomastia, or male breast growth, and other complications allegedly associated with its use. In noting that Risperdal and other antipsychotic medications should be used cautiously, this report points to many of these same complications," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free legal consultations to men and boys who allegedly developed gynecomastia due to their use of Risperdal.

California Foster Children Drugged At "Alarming" Rate

San Jose Mercury News has published the first of a four-part series of investigative articles about the psychotropic drugging of California children. “A year of interviews with foster youth, caregivers, doctors, researchers and legal advocates uncovered how the largest foster care system in the U.S. has grown dependent on quick-fix, taxpayer-funded, big-profit pharmaceuticals — and how the state has done little to stop it,” reports the newspaper in part one.

San Jose Mercury News discovered that 12.2 percent of California foster children are being described two or more psychotropic medications at a time, while more than half of those who live in residential group homes — and as many as 100 percent in some counties — are authorized by juvenile courts to be given psychotropic drugs.

“To be prescribing these medications so extensively and so, I think, thoughtlessly, with so little evidence supporting their use, it’s just malpractice,” one Berkeley child psychiatrist told the San Jose Mercury News. “It really is drugging them.”

The newspaper also reports that the government has been resistant to providing key data about the practices.
