Pro-Israel Students Stare Down Hamas-backed SJP at UCLA

Finally!

Matthew Vadum

More than 200 pro-Israel activists picketed what Haaretz described as the "largest ever pro-Palestinian student conference held at UCLA," letting members of the Hamas-backed anti-Semitic hate group Students for Justice in Palestine know that their radicalism and violence against Jews and Israel supporters will no longer go unchallenged on campus.

Groups supporting Israel gave the campus Left a taste of its own medicine. Turn-about is, after all, fair play.

Students Supporting Israel (SSI), Reservists on Duty (RoD), and other pro-Israel groups came together in Los Angeles to protest a recent weekend conference. Literature documenting the role of Students for Justice in Palestine as a front for the terrorist organization Hamas was provided by the David Horowitz Freedom Center (DHFC). The DHFC literature documented the fact that the Hamas-funded, anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement on campus is a terrorist operation, created by Hamas, funded by Hamas and advancing Hamas’ chief political operation: the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement.

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) claimed 500 people registered for the conference, which was titled, “Radical Hope: Resistance in the Face of Adversity.” When it announced the conference, the group bragged about disrupting pro-Israel events, stating, “Other instances of our perseverance include disruptions of pro-war, Zionist, and racist guest speakers.” The anti-Semitic SJP’s agenda is demonizing Israel spreading genocidal lies about its creation, and justifying Hamas terrorist attacks on civilian populations.

The Assault On Academic Freedom At UCLA

The College Fix
Kathryn Hinderaker - St Olaf College •October 23, 2017

Over the past few years, UCLA has lost four prominent scholars: James Enstrom, Keith Fink, Val Rust and Tim Groseclose.

Each incident is different, whether they left, resigned, or were forced out. But they all have a common thread: each professor took a stance against left-liberal principles at UCLA — and now they are no longer teaching there.

This attack on conservatism is not unique to UCLA, but the school has become the perfect case study for the phenomenon.

The converging timelines of these four professors’ experiences show that rejection of intellectual freedom in academia is a pattern of behavior, not an isolated event.

Stifling speech and diverse thought on college campuses takes place nationwide, and UCLA is no exception. Although the four recent examples found at one of California’s flagship research institutions are particularly egregious and should cause concern that the problem is pressing and must be addressed.

The case of James Enstrom

Enstrom, a professor at the UCLA School of Public Health since 1976, received a notice from the school of his termination in June 2010. His research, they say, was “not aligned with the academic mission of the Department.”

Enstrom’s crime? He had published a well researched, peer-reviewed study that debunked the false scientific theory that fine particulate air pollution kills Californians. This, he argued, was reason to eliminate many unnecessary environmental regulations in place in California, some of which were pioneered by fellow faculty.

Enstrom had been given every reason to believe his position at UCLA was secure, but once his unpopular opinions gained traction, administrators pulled the rug out from under him, and he was fired. With the help of FIRE and the American Center for Law and Justice, Enstrom sued for “being unconstitutionally retaliated against for his research and writing.” In the end, UCLA settled and Enstrom was allowed to keep his “retired researcher” status, effectively undoing the termination.

The case of Val Rust

Today Rust is a professor emeritus at UCLA. Before that he was a pioneer in his field of international and comparative education, and spent more than four decades mentoring students from around the world and assisting in international development efforts.

But after Rust corrected one student’s capitalization of the word “indigenous” and questioned modern feminist theory, students grabbed their pitchforks.

On Nov. 14, 2013, a group of students made a sudden entrance into Rust’s class, and proceeded to form a circle around him so they could read to him the grievances that “graduate students of color” had about him and his class, reports City Journal.

The school reacted to this “troubling situation” that they were taking “extremely seriously” by placing three other professors in the class with Professor Rust. Rust, presumably, was no longer capable of handling his classroom alone.

In the following weeks, the students circulated a petition for further action to be taken, and convened for a town hall. The situation escalated after Rust approached one of the protest leaders after class to engage him in conversation. The conversation resulted in the student filing a criminal charge of battery against Rust, a then 79-year-old, for at one point reaching out and touching the student’s arm. Rust was banned from school premises for the rest of the academic year.

The case of Keith Fink

Fink, an attorney, was a continuing lecturer at UCLA teaching highly popular classes on free speech, among other subjects. He was also critical of UCLA administration, and in particular their tendency to stifle students’ free speech rights.

Fink was subject to a job performance review earlier this year to determine if he will continue lecturing at the school. This is standard practice, and according to Fink, usually a breeze to pass. However, Fink said he was railroaded by a star-chamber process run by peers biased against him. He failed the performance review.

Despite petitions against the review decision and support from fellow faculty and students, Fink was terminated in June 2017. But he continues to fight back against UCLA’s oppressive administration. He even plans to establish a nonprofit to provide free legal services for UCLA students and professors whose rights have been violated.

The case of Tim Groseclose

Groseclose had taught at UCLA as a professor of political science since 2003. He’s a known conservative, and published the book “Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind” in 2011.

He came up for a promotion, but despite extremely favorable letters, and even some support from his far left-wing colleagues, the promotion was denied by an anonymous committee of five people.

In a recent email to The College Fix, Groseclose said that the “incident made it clear to me that conservatives were no longer welcome at UCLA.”

Groseclose also says it became clear that if he stayed at UCLA, his salary would not keep pace with inflation. And in some of the world’s best timing, a peer at George Mason University called to ask him to apply for a position there. Groseclose happily agreed, and accepted a job offer there in the fall of 2013.

Groseclose said he had seen the writing on the wall at UCLA, citing the Enstrom affair.

“So when the committee voted against my promotion, things were clear to me: Even if your research productivity is the highest in your department, even double that of second place, if you have conservative political views, then you’re not welcome at UCLA,” he said.

‘Playing russian roulette’

Reached for comment, a right-leaning UCLA professor still working there told The College Fix that “conservatives, if they are going to be conservatives [at UCLA], they are playing russian roulette. They are taking their lives into their hands.” He asked to remain unnamed.

UCLA did not respond to The College Fix’s request for comment.

The summaries of each case does not do them justice. All are clear acts of assault on academic freedom, and should not be taken lightly. But as each case is different, it shows there is more than one way for universities to expel intellectual diversity.

The examples at UCLA have borne that out.

To say there is no conclusion to be drawn between these four incidents at UCLA would be willful ignorance of a larger problem facing higher education today.

For every public case, there are perhaps a dozen more professors self-censoring to protect their jobs.

This limiting of speech in the classroom must end, or students suffer. Thinking critically is rather difficult when you have never had anyone be critical of your thoughts.

Yet this trend will likely continue at UCLA and elsewhere, and our country’s self-proclaimed bastions of diversity will continue to get more and more homogeneous.

Leftist Language Control On Campus

frontpagemag

How the "progressive" Gestapo rules the American campus.

Recently, the University of New Hampshire’s “Bias-Free Language Guide” (BFLG) was revealed to the public. There was a backlash and the President of UNH flew into damage-control mode.
Soon thereafter, administrators decided to pull the guide from its website.
While writing about the BFLG, I assured those readers who may not be in the know that UNH is all too typical of academia today.  About as outrageous as the BFLG was President Mark W. Huddleston’s assertion that speech “is free and unfettered” on UNH’s campus.
The contemporary campus is many things, but a bastion of free and unfettered speech is not one of them.
Take the University of California’s program on “Diversity and Faculty development.” The program identifies a host of “micro-aggressions.”  The latter are “the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.”
A chart is listed with three columns. In the far left column are “themes.”  In the middle column are “micro-aggression examples.”  In the far right column are the “messages” that these instances of micro-aggressions convey.
Below is a select list of illustrations :
Because of physical appearances or name, you assume a person to be “foreign-born.” By complimenting that person on his or her fluency in English—“You speak English very well”—you communicate this message:
“You are not a true American.”
If, upon encountering a “person of color” who happens to be good at math, you exclaim, “Wow! How did you become so good in math?” you imply that “people of color are generally not as intelligent as Whites.”
It may surprise some people to discover that appeals to “color blindness,” at least when they’re made by a white person—or a “White person”—indicates that the person in question “does not want to or need to acknowledge race.”
Statements like, “When I look at you, I don’t see color;” “There is only one race, the human race;” “America is a melting pot;” and, “I don’t believe in race” are offensive.  Such statements amount to whites telling non-whites: “Assimilate to the dominant culture.”
Those who make these appeals to a color-blind ideal are in effect guilty of “denying the significance of a person of color’s racial/ethnic experience and history,” of “denying the individual as a racial/cultural being.”
Denials of one’s “racism,” “sexism,” and “heterosexism” suffice to convict one of such transgressions.
“I’m not a racist. I have several Black friends” implies that one could “never be racist” because of one’s circumstances.
“As a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority” entails that “gender oppression” and “racial oppression” are comparable, or even identical, which in turn erroneously suggests that the woman under discussion could never be “racist.”
If one asks a racial minority, “Are you sure you were being followed in the store?” one is guilty of “denying the personal experience of individuals who experience bias.”
One of my personal favorites on UCLA’s list of black balled expressions is what this program refers to as “the myth of Meritocracy.”
If you say, “I believe the most qualified person should get the job;” “America is the land of opportunity;” “Everyone can succeed in this society if they work hard enough;” or “Men and women have equal opportunities for achievement,” then you are culpable of some pretty bad stuff.
If you believe that individuals should be treated according to their merits—not their skin color or gender—then you stand condemned for saying things like: “The playing field is even so if women cannot make it, the problem is with them,” and “People of color are lazy and/or incompetent and need to work harder.”
According to Walter E. Williams, who also wrote a bit about UCLA’s “diversity” instruction, Thomas Sowell referred to these “micro-aggressions” as “micro-totalitarianisms.”
Indeed. But lest we get too depressed by the sheer joylessness, the life-draining, the deadly seriousness of these academic totalitarians, we should try having a good laugh at their expense.
I suggest some new items for the folks at UCLA or UNH or any of the Politically Correct storm troopers who are interested.
For starters, these regressive speech codes repeatedly use the language of “women” and “history” (as in “historically marginalized, oppressed,” etc.”).  But doesn’t this language reinforce and perpetuate Western male “patriarchy” and “misogyny?”  After all, etymologically, “woman” literally means “woman-man.”  That is, the very label of “woman” defines women in terms of their relation to and dependence upon men.
Why not replace “woman” with “estrogen-endowed bipeds” or “homo sapiens?” (“Human being” and, even worse, “person,” are normative or moral concepts.  As such, they are “exclusionary,” for they exclude non-human animals, fish, insects, and plants. In doing so, the use of “human beings” and “persons” facilitates speciesism.)
“History”—I mean “HIS-story”—genderizes (academic leftists love making up words) time. It also underscores the traditional Western prejudice that there is a single objective reality to which we have access.
There isn’t “HIS-story.” There are just “stories”—and everybody has one.
Since “America” was named after Amerigo Vespucci, a white—or White—explorer, aren’t references to “America” and “American” an offense against indigenous peoples and people of color?  This being so, “Native American” and “African-American” must go: The former suggests that there was an America before the Europeans crossed the Atlantic to the Western hemisphere, and the latter is doubly offensive:
Not only is “America” a Eurocentric invention devised to honor a European, so too is “Africa” a name invented by white Europeans—the Romans!
But the greatest chuckle we can get from this self-parody from UCLA is the self-contradiction to be found at the very core of the PC ideology that it embodies.
Assuming for the moment, as this guide assumes, that “racism” is a meaningful notion. If “racism” is immoral, as this guide assumes, then it can only be so if something like a “color-blind” ideal is accepted.  If it is wrong to treat people differently or badly because of the color of their skin or their cultural background, then this means that weshould treat people decently regardless of what they look like or where they’re from.
But UCLA regards color-blindness as a function or disguise for “racism.”
So it both is and isn’t “racist” to treat race as a morally irrelevant characteristic in one’s dealings with others.
If we don’t laugh, we will cry.

OK. They've certainly demolished that one. Because they are still getting away with mooching their lavish life styles from the tax payers and will continue to do so even After mooning us with the opposite of 'Merit', . . . on Steroids.
And where is it the sigh-entists unlocking the diagnostic mysteries of the human mind Got their ideas from in the first place?

UCLA Health Hack Compromises Info For 4.5 Million Individuals

Thanks Janet, for bringing the same caring competence and (all too) personal service you brought to our airports, to the University of California system.
Fierce Healthcare
July 17, 2015 | By

A hack of UCLA Health's computer network may have compromised personal and medical information for as many as 4.5 million individuals, the health system said Friday. Names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, Medicare or health plan ID numbers and some medical information was put at risk, it said in an announcement.
The four-hospital system determined on May 5 that hackers accessed parts of its network; the investigation into the hack, which included participation from the FBI, began last October, when UCLA Health detected suspicious activity.
James Atkinson, interim associate vice chancellor and president of the UCLA Hospital System, said that the system has already taken "significant steps" to protect data and strengthen its network. UCLA is offering all those impacted  by the breach 12 months of identity theft recovery and restoration services on top of other healthcare ID protection tools.
The health system also is working with "leading cybersurveillance and security firms" to monitor its network, and has expanded its internal security team.
"We take this attack on our systems extremely seriously," Atkinson said. "We sincerely regret any impact this incident may have on those we serve."
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Atkinson called the hackers "a highly sophisticated group, likely to be offshore."
The attack is the latest in a recent string of high-volume breaches. Health insurers  Anthem and Premera Blue Cross discovered data breaches earlier this year, with the former's compromising the personal health information of 80 million customers. A hack of CareFirst announced in May also compromised information for roughly 1.1 million current and former consumers.
Last summer, a breach of Franklin, Tennessee-based Community Health Systems--which operates 206 hospitals in 29 states--also compromised information for about 4.5 million consumers.
"The real problem here is trying to avoid having breaches in the first place," he toldFierceHealthPayer. "It's almost as if the presumption is there are going to be breaches, and therefore, they're just going to go ahead and offer the protection ahead of time."

UCLA Hiring Illegal Immigrant Interns

David Stockman Shock Blog: The Real Unemployment Rate Is 42.9%

weaselzippers
Paid, of course (only Americans work for free).
Illegal immigrant students in California are actualizing their dreams this summer.
The UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Resource Center is allowing undocumented students to apply for Dream Summer, a ten-week summer program that provides paid internship opportunities for immigrants in California, regardless of their immigration or insurance status. The program will encourage them to advocate for immigration reform and promote universal health care access regardless of immigration status.
The Center says the program began in 2011 after the U.S. Senate failed to pass the DREAM Act in 2010, which would have given a path to citizenship to illegal immigrants who came to the United states before the age of 16. The program claims to have provided 418 internship opportunities to immigrant youth throughout the nation.
UCLA is among the growing number of University of California schools, including UC San Diego and UC Berkeley, to provide academic scholarships and opportunities exclusively for illegal immigrants, some of whom move on to become active spokesmen for immigration reform.

Thank You Campus Reform and Zip.
