While Wounded Soldiers Wait, Bureaucrats Rake In Bonuses

While Wounded Soldiers Wait, Bureaucrats Rake In Bonuses
Katie Pavlich | Aug 26, 2013

While disabled veterans, many with severe brain injuries and post-traumatic stress, continue to wait for compensation, Veteran's Affairs bureaucrats are raking in the dough.
Staffers in the Department of Veterans Affairs have been reaping millions of dollars in bonuses despite a huge backlog of cases that has veterans waiting hundreds of days for compensation.

The bonuses were reported Monday by journalism project News21, whose findings were published in The Washington Post.

The report said that in 2011, more than two-thirds of claims processors received a total of $5.5 million in bonuses. That same year, the backlog of claims swelled by 155 percent.
Veterans who file a disability claim today will have to wait for a year or longer to get the benefits they earned and need. Only in the government can you receive a bonus while wounded veterans wait for their compensation and major backlog problems continue. Back-long claims are sitting at nearly 600,000. These aren't just numbers, these backlogs have real life, serious and long-term consequencesfor veterans and their families.
Michael "Mickey" Flynn D'heron waits for the VA on his backyard patio.

Between his small brick home and the sound wall that barely cuts traffic noise on busy Memorial Parkway, he bides his time, drinking Miller Light and smoking Pall Malls. He's waiting for the Department of Veterans Affairs to compensate him for the demons he brought home from Iraq.

"I'll tell you the truth. I never believed in mental illness," says D'heron, a city firefighter and former Army reservist. "Never. I always thought that you suck it up; deal with it. And then this."

D'heron, 32, served from 2008 to 2009 as a military police officer in two of Iraq's most violent cities during heavy combat after a surge of 20,000 American troops into the country in 2007. Now he spends nights outside on his patio, wrapped in a heavy blanket, hunkered down in an office swivel chair, isolated from his wife, Jennifer, his newborn son, Liam, and a stepdaughter, Kayla, 7, who puzzles over dad's "Army sickness."

"It's like he's not even part of the family most of the time," Jennifer says.

He filed his disability claim March 7, 2012. President Obama and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki say veterans should wait no more than 125 days for a resolution. As of Wednesday, D'heron will have waited 463 days.
Our vets deserve better.

Thank You Ms Pavlich and Townhall.

OFA (Obamabots) Unable To Draw A Single Protestor To GOP Congressman's Townhall

Heh…
ALLOWAY, N.J. (WTSP) – Republican Rep. Frank LoBiondo represents a South Jersey congressional district with a sizable Hispanic population, farmlands that employ migrant workers, an influential labor union presence and a constituency that voted twice for President Obama.
He’s precisely the kind of GOP lawmaker immigration advocates said they would target over the August recess, when members of Congress return home for the longest stretch of the year.
But at a local Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting and a Rotary Club luncheon on Thursday, immigration was never mentioned.
The 10-term incumbent met with constituents in open forums where he fielded questions on the economy, the implementation of Obama’s health care law, unrest in the Middle East and even how to improve local infrastructure to ease traffic to the Jersey shore.
It’s not because advocates aren’t trying. LoBiondo has not staked out any hard-line positions on immigration, and his is one of 17 congressional districts the House Democrats’ campaign operation said they would target on immigration in August with “media tactics, messaging amplification and community outreach,” according to a memo.
Last week, Organizing for Action, an outside political group promoting Obama’s agenda, used its local New Jersey Twitter account in an effort to organize supporters to appear at a LoBiondo event in Cape May to show support for an immigration overhaul. Jason Galanes, LoBiondo’s spokesman, notified event organizers and local police that protesters might be in attendance. It was not necessary. “No one showed up,” Galanes said.

Thank You WTSP and Zip.
Even the Obamabots are depressed. They Got what they wanted in Obama, Exactly what they wanted, and in being implemented it's dragging the entire Country down in Ruin.
They have Nothing to celebrate, They have Nothing to shout about.
Their Guy has done Everything They believed would bring about Utopia.
It certainly took them long enough to come to the party.

U.N. Still a Pathetic Joke: Inspectors in Syria Forbidden From Finding Out WHO Used Chemical Weapons, Only If They Were Used

U.N. Still a Pathetic Joke: Inspectors in Syria Forbidden From Finding Out WHO Used Chemical Weapons, Only If They Were Used

Is there a more useless organization than the United Nations?
Via WSJ:
… On Sunday, the U.N. said its inspection team was preparing to start its fact-finding mission on Monday after Syria said it would allow U.N. personnel now in Damascus immediate access to the affected areas.
“The team must be able to conduct a full, thorough and unimpeded investigation,” said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday night. However, the team is only mandated to determine if chemical weapons were used, not who used them, Mr. Ban’s spokesman said.
Syrian state television, airing a statement attributed to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said agreement was reached following a meeting between Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and Angela Kane, the U.N. disarmament chief, who arrived in Damascus on Saturday. The Syrian statement said the timing of the visit would be coordinated between the U.N. team led by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom and the Syrian government.
However, it wasn’t clear how the U.N. team would be able to start the work given the continuing military campaign. All areas in question have been sealed off by the military and strenuous restrictions were imposed at checkpoints.
Thank You WSJ and Zip.

ObamaCare's Architects Reap Windfall As Washington Lobbyists

The Hill has;
ObamaCare's Architects Reap Windfall As Washington Lobbyists
By Megan R. Wilson - 08/25/13 12:06 PM ET

[Ed; As if anyone Should, and we repeat Should, be surprised.]

ObamaCare has become big business for an elite network of Washington lobbyists and consultants who helped shape the law from the inside.

More than 30 former administration officials, lawmakers and congressional staffers who worked on the healthcare law have set up shop on K Street since 2010.

Major lobbying firms such as Fierce, Isakowitz & Blalock, The Glover Park Group, Alston & Bird, BGR Group and Akin Gump can all boast an Affordable Care Act insider on their lobbying roster — putting them in a prime position to land coveted clients.

“When [Vice President] Biden leaned over [during the signing of the healthcare law] and said to [President] Obama, ‘This is a big f'n deal,’ ” said Ivan Adler, a headhunter at the McCormick Group, “he was right.”

Veterans of the healthcare push are now lobbying for corporate giants such as Delta Air Lines, UPS, BP America and Coca-Cola, and for healthcare companies including GlaxoSmithKline, UnitedHealth Group and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

Ultimately, the clients are after one thing: expert help in dealing with the most sweeping overhaul of the country’s healthcare system in decades.

"Healthcare lobbying on K Street is as strong as it ever was, and it's due to the fact that the Affordable Care Act seems to be ever-changing," Adler said. "What's at stake is huge. ... Whenever there's a lot of money at stake, there's a lot of lobbying going on."

The voracious need for lobbying help in dealing with ObamaCare has created a price premium for lobbyists who had first-hand experience in crafting or debating the law.

Experts say that those able to fetch the highest salaries have come from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) or committees with oversight power over healthcare.

Demand for ObamaCare insiders is even higher now that major pieces of the law, including the healthcare exchanges and individual insurance mandate, are being set up through a slew of complicated federal regulations.

“Congress is easy to watch,” said Tim LaPira, a politics professor at James Madison University who researches the government affairs industry, “but agencies are harder to watch because their actions are often opaque. This leads to a greater demand on K Street” for people who understand the fine print, he said.

“K Street's agenda follows the government's agenda. It's not typically the other way around," he said.

Watchdogs say the rise of the ObamaCare lobbyist is another example of the “revolving door” that turns public service into private enrichment.

“After passage of major legislation, those who have networks on Capitol Hill take exceedingly lucrative jobs with the same industries subject to the legislation,” said Craig Holman, a lobbyist for Public Citizen. “It raises questions about the [bill's] integrity.”

For K Street, healthcare lobbying has been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a down business cycle.

While lobbying revenue at major firms has been flat or declining in recent years, the healthcare law has generated steady work — a trend that is likely to continue for years to come.

That’s because ObamaCare runs on a long timeline — well into the next administration. Unless the law is severely crippled, the reform's rules and requirements will be rolling out through at least 2020.

That’s good news for lobbyists who want to sign up clients for the long haul.

The windfall from the healthcare overhaul is being reaped at firms large and small. Some veterans of the legislative push have landed at boutique firms that are increasingly specializing in lobbying niches.

The firm Avenue Solutions, for instance, recently hired Yvette Fontenot, a former staffer for both the Senate Finance Committee, which wrote ObamaCare’s tax-related provisions, and HHS's Office of Health Reform, which is assisting the implementation.

Since her hire in April, the four-woman firm has picked up Health Care Service Corp. as a client, and Fontenot is now lobbying for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association as well.

The Democratic firm banks about $3 million in revenue per year, records show, but is on pace for growth in 2013, earning $1.8 million through the first half of the year.

It’s not just ex-staffers who are becoming trusted ObamaCare guides — former members of Congress are lobbying on the law as well.

Former Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) joined Alston & Bird in 2011 after dealing with healthcare and tax issues as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Now Pomeroy and his one-time chief of staff, Bob Siggins, are lobbying on ObamaCare for clients such as clients such as Vision Service Plan, the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans and Medicare — a health insurance provider.

Consulting is another avenue former staffers and officials can take to work for outside interests while they look to comply with and shape the impending regulations.

“This is not a do-it-yourself project; it's complicated,” said Adler. “They need help from insiders to help navigate this thing correctly.”

Former senior counsel to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Dora Hughes became a senior policy adviser at the law firm Sidley Austin last year.

Hughes is not a registered lobbyist, and told The Hill she mainly provides “strategic policy advice” while abiding by the ethics pledge not to lobby the administration. She has no congressional contacts in her sights, either.

Even the president needs some lobbying know-how when it comes to advancing ObamaCare.

The White House brought on Clinton administration veteran and former lobbyist Chris Jennings last month to help navigate the implementation of the law.

During a call with several directors of the state healthcare exchanges on Wednesday, Jennings was seated in a plum position — right next to Obama.

Thank You Ms Wilson and The Hill.

NSA Admits Its Analysts Purposefully Violated Citizen's Privacy Rights

The Hill;
NSA Admits Its Analysts Purposefully Violated Citizen's Privacy Rights
By Brendan Sasso - 08/23/13 01:15 PM ET

National Security Agency officials deliberately overstepped their legal authority multiple times in the past decade, the agency acknowledged on Friday.

The admission contradicts previous statements by lawmakers and the Obama administration that any privacy violations were unintentional.

"Over the past decade, very rare instances of willful violations of NSA’s authorities have been found, but none under [the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] or the Patriot Act," the agency said in a statement. "NSA takes very seriously allegations of misconduct, and cooperates fully with any investigations – responding as appropriate. NSA has zero tolerance for willful violations of the agency’s authorities."

According to Bloomberg News, which first
reported on the NSA's statement, the violations were of Executive Order 12333, which was issued by President Reagan in 1981.

The admission comes days after the government released a 2011 court opinion that concluded that the NSA had unconstitutionally collected about 56,000 emails of Americans over a three-year period. The NSA said that incident and other legal violations were the result of technical glitches.

Last week, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she was unaware of any intentional privacy violations.

"As I have said previously, the committee has never identified an instance in which the NSA has intentionally abused its authority to conduct surveillance for inappropriate purposes," she said in a statement.

Feinstein made the comment after The Washington Post published an internal NSA audit finding that the agency illegally obtained private communications thousands of times in recent years. But the news report did not identify any deliberate violations.

"The disclosed documents demonstrate that there was no intentional and willful violation of the law and that the NSA is not collecting the email and telephone traffic of all Americans," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said at the time.

"The committee does not tolerate any intentional violation of the law. Human and technical errors, like all of the errors reported in this story, are unfortunately inevitable in any organization and especially in a highly technical and complicated system like NSA," he added.

Josh Earnest, the White House deputy press secretary, only echoed Feinstein's statement that her committee had not identified deliberate abuse.

"Rather, the majority of the compliance incidents are unintentional," Earnest said at the time.

One official told Bloomberg that the actions were the result of "overzealous NSA employees or contractors eager to prevent any encore to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks."

Thank You Mr Sasso and The Hill.

Obama's New U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power Skips Emergency Security Council Meeting To Vacation, At Charlie Chaplin Film Festival

weaselzippers.us;
Obama's New U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power Skips Emergency Security Council Meeting To On Vacation . . . UPDATE, To Go To Charlie Chaplin Film Festival

We now know why the State Department wouldn’t say why Power missed the meeting.
Via Fox News:
Mystery solved. America’s ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power was in Ireland on a personal trip when she missed an emergency meeting on the alleged chemical gas attack in Syria, U.N. sources tell Fox News.
A day earlier, State Department officials were mum when asked for information on Power’s whereabouts. She had come under fire for missing Wednesday’s urgent U.N. Security Council meeting, where delegations weighed how to respond to charges that the Assad regime had just committed the deadliest chemical weapons attack in the country’s two-year civil war.
The meeting, and her absence, came just 19 days after Power assumed the U.N. leadership post.
Power also did not attend a meeting Friday afternoon on Sudan — another trouble spot that Power has focused on in the past — though it is likely that such a meeting would have been attended by a deputy anyway.
Update:
No joke:
A former advisor to President Obama is in Kerry.
Harvard Law Professor, Cass Sunstein is speaking in Waterville this afternoon as part of Charlie Chaplin Film Festival.
He is the former Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Obama administration.
Mr Sunstein is married to the US Ambassador to the UN, Irish born Samantha Power; the couple married in Waterville in 2008.
Cass Sunstein will be speaking about government regulation at today’s event.
He says the EU needs to look at how it introduces regulations; he believes it needs to be evidence based, rather than on a hunch or intuition.

Thank You Fox, Radio Kerry, and Zip.

Nice to know that the adults are running the country, isn't it?

U.S. Warships Move Into Position For Possible Strike On Syria

U.S. Warships Move Into Position For Possible Strike On Syria

So we’re going to fire cruise missiles on behalf of al-Qaeda, and nobody in D.C. has a problem with this?
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. naval forces are moving closer to Syria as President Barack Obama considers military options for responding to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad government. The president emphasized that a quick intervention in the Syrian civil war was problematic, given the international considerations that should precede a military strike.
The White House said the president would meet Saturday with his national security team to consider possible next steps by the United States. Officials say once the facts are clear, Obama will make a decision about how to proceed.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel declined to discuss any specific force movements while saying that Obama had asked the Pentagon to prepare military options for Syria. U.S. defense officials told The Associated Press that the Navy had sent a fourth warship armed with ballistic missiles into the eastern Mediterranean Sea but without immediate orders for any missile launch into Syria.
U.S. Navy ships are capable of a variety of military action, including launching Tomahawk cruise missiles, as they did against Libya in 2011 as part of an international action that led to the overthrow of the Libyan government.

Thank You Zip and AP.

And the Lightning of Obama Strikes again: a President whose OK with Children who annoy their Unionized Teachers, the Elderly, and All Stops in between being defrauded Out of their Civil Rights and Into a Lobotomy, . . . is now preparing to launch Cruise Missles into Syria, . . . on behalf of Al-Qaeda.

AFTER, his equally competent Former Sec of State her HRC-ness:

No matter who ends up in charge in Syria they're going to hate our guts. But Obama's committing America's NAVY to back up, . . . Al-Qaeda.
