A top Democrat praised President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel the same day he voted to impeach Trump on the House floor.
The top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, New York Rep. Eliot Engel, praised Trump’s decision Wednesday, calling the move “long overdue” in a statement just hours after he and 57 other Democrats in the House voted to impeach Trump. This effort got shut down immediately in a sweeping 364-58 vote.
“This decision is long overdue and helps correct a decades-long indignity.” Engel said. “I support the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel and to move the U.S. embassy there.”
“It recognizes where Israel’s government — the parliament and the prime minister — is based, as well as the ancient and unbreakable connection between the Jewish people and Jerusalem,” he added.
The statement came hours after Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green and five other House Democrats, introduced articles of impeachment against the president in November and listed a number of reasons they believe Trump should be impeached. Although House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer told their Democratic colleagues in the House to stop pushing articles of impeachment against Trump before the vote took place, Engel still voted to impeach the president. Engel followed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s move in supporting Trump’s move to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.
Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital Wednesday, directing the State Department to begin the process of relocating the embassy that will take several years.
