To Improve Healthcare For Vets VA Looks At Closing Hospitals

Seems logical. After trying to pay bonuses to the VA Hosp folks who killed hundreds of Vets by denying/delaying them appointments and then trying to cover it up, they should close hospitals so the Vets who formerly had to wait and be ignored until they Died, will now receive the timely and due as part of their service, medical attention they need.

Problem solved, Government style.

One hospital per State?
Does the Department of Veterans Affairs need a BRAC round?
A board to move and close unneeded hospitals — such as the military system to shutter old bases — is one of the recommendations in a landmark independent review of the VA released Friday.
The long-awaited report mandated by Congress found an agency plagued by problems of leadership and bureaucracy while also struggling to provide uniform, high-quality health care. It determined that radical changes might be needed for the agency’s Health Administration to emerge from its ongoing crisis.
Lawmakers ordered up the review last summer at the height of the VA’s scandal over manipulation of patient wait times at hospitals and clinics across the country. The report, dated Sept. 1, was written by the federally funded group CMS Alliance to Modernize Healthcare and posted Friday morning to the VA website.
Teams conducting the review “consistently found that VHA’s health care facilities deliver strikingly different patient experiences, apply inconsistent business processes, and differ widely on key measures of performance and efficiency.”
The review also said the health care system is “plagued by many problems: growing bureaucracy, leadership and staffing challenges, and an unsustainable trajectory of capital costs.”
Such findings track with myriad audits and media reports over the past 18 months that have documented widespread VA dysfunction. The wait-time manipulation, which led to the resignation of then-VA secretary Eric Shinseki, began the turmoil in 2014 and snowballed into the biggest scandal in the agency’s history.
The review makes some bold recommendations for turning the VA around.
Congress should create a governance board to guide the new VA strategy. The board could also reshape the agency’s geographic footprint, moving or closing hospitals to better serve veteran health care needs, similar to the Base Realignment and Closure process, it said.

University of California at Irvine: Professor Slams Chancellor's Memorial Day Message For Honoring Troops

weaselzippers;
Chuck O’Connell is a sociology professor at the University of California-Irvine, and he has a problem with the school’s Chancellor’s Memorial Day message.
Why?
It doesn’t address specifically, among other things, civilian casualties of America’s wars, and anti-war and wounded veterans.
The professor offers up several past conflicts which, according to him, didn’t actually “ensure our nation’s safety”: the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
He also brings up the oft-cited (progressive) narrative that President George W. Bush “lied” in order to get the United States into Iraq.
Note the simplistic assumptions that soldiers who died did so “serving their country” and that those who served did so “to ensure our nation’s safety.” Has every war the soldiers fought been for our safety? Is it not possible that some of the many American wars were unjust wars for nefarious purposes? Is it not possible that some wars benefited only select segments of the population while requiring others to pay the costs in blood and treasure? Did the U.S. wars against the Filipinos, the Koreans, the Vietnamese, the Afghanis and the Iraqis, for example, really ensure our safety? Note the questions not asked.
Note that nothing is said about the falsifications on which the war in Iraq, for example, was based. Is the Chancellor suggesting to us that the officials of the U.S. government never deceive the public about the reasons for war? Does he really believe that the war in Iraq was based on truthful claims? Have the weapons of mass destruction finally been found? Has a connection between the regime of Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda been proven at last? If a war is based on falsehoods, can it be just? If a war is unjust, can those who fight it be “heroes”?
Thank You College Fix and Zip.

The University of California, Again. How lovely, as in How lovely an argument for not only the abolition of tenure but the abolition of Federal Funding.
