NRA's LaPierre: Mentally Ill List Skirts Due Process

NRA executive director Wayne LaPierre outlined the problems with some of the proposed bans on “mentally ill” people owning guns during his speech at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference.

LaPierre specifically pointed to a regulation that went into effect during the Obama administration that prevented people who signed away their financial authority from owning firearms. (RELATED: FACT CHECK: Did Trump Make It Easier For The Mentally Ill To Get Guns?)

“Imagine this, and this happened, and it is true, imagine telling an elderly couple that because they sought help to do their taxes, that they could no longer exercise their fundamental Second Amendment right,” LaPierre explained. “That’s exactly what Obama did. His administration proposed that some Social Security recipients who granted financial authority to a family member, friend or financial professional were banned from purchasing a firearm. No questions asked.”

He explained that after the Florida school shooting, people on the left called for more extensive restrictions that would ban guns from people who ever sought treatment for mental health.

“And now some people are calling for a new list, of anyone, anyone who sought mental health care to deny them their Second Amendment rights,” he asserted, reminding the audience that the NRA helped introduce the national instant check system.

Thank You Ms Athey, Mr LaPierre, and the DC.

Mental Health/Illness Labels and Disabilities in any form disregard and stomp all over Due Process, but it is nice to see the NRA address the topic.
