U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, M.D., will step down in March after almost six years at the helm, Reuters reports. Hamburg, 59, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009 and is one of the longest-serving FDA commissioners after a stint at the National Institutes of Health and as New York City's health commissioner. She said in a note to her staff that she chose to vacate her post with "very mixed emotions," according to the news agency. The move comes less than a week after Hamburg described how the FDA will retool its regulatory framework to accommodate Obama's ambitious genomic sequencing initiative known as precision medicine. Hamburg's legacy includes efforts to improve efficiency and patient engagement in drug development. Some expect Robert Califf, M.D., who was recently tapped by the FDA to oversee its drug, medical device and tobacco policy, to be Hamburg's successor. Article
