BREAKING: Trump To Order US Withdrawal From Paris Climate Accord

redstate

Posted at 1:02 pm on January 30, 2017 by streiff

I would have posted this sooner but I had to grab my power washer and blow liberal brain matter and skull fragments off my window.
The United States will switch course on climate change and pull out of a global pact to cut emissions, said Myron Ebell, who headed U.S. President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) transition team until his inauguration.
“(Trump) could do it by executive order tomorrow or he could do it as part of a larger package,” Ebell told a conference in London on Monday. “I have no idea of the timing.”
Trump, a climate change doubter, campaigned on a pledge to boost the U.S. oil and gas drilling and coal mining industries by slashing regulation. He also promised to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement aimed at curbing global warming.
Trump’s administration has asked the EPA to temporarily halt all contracts, grants and interagency agreements pending a review, according to sources.
I’m fine with environmental stewardship, we should want to leave our kids a world at least as good as the one we inherited, but the global warming scaremongering is enough to put you off your feed. Naturally, Armageddon looms if we leave this agreement:
United Nations climate chief Patricia Espinosa has warned US President Donald Trump not to pull out of the Paris climate accord.
“Ultimately, this is about the competitiveness of the United States,” Espinosa, a former foreign minister who heads the Bonn-based UN Climate Change Secretariat, told dpa in an interview.
During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly called for a renegotiation of the UN accord, whose aim is to keep global temperature increases well below 2 degrees Celsius by transforming the global economy away from fossil fuels this century.
“We do not know what he will do – all we know so far is that his stance differs from that of the Obama administration,” Espinosa said.
Actually, the entire agreement is about disadvantaging the economies of the developed nations and, to a great extent, about advantaging China and whenever a UN bureaucrat starts touting making America more competitive, you should run for the doors.

 Thank You Streiff and Redstate.

Obama On Protests Against Trump Executive Order: "American Values Are At Stake"

weaselzippers

Shut up.
Via Politico:
Former President Barack Obama’s office released a statement Monday supporting the protests going on around the country, and speaking out against discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion, saying “American values are at stake.”
Kevin Lewis, spokesman for Obama in his post-presidency, said that Obama — who has been threading the balance between the tradition of presidents deferring to their successors and coming out against President Donald Trump on specific issues he considered core values — “is heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country.”
It is Obama’s first statement since leaving the White House.
“Citizens exercising their Constitutional right to assemble, organize and have their voices heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake,” Lewis said.

Dubai Security Chief: "We Completely Support" President Trump's Muslim Ban

We're thinking this guy's not going to get invited to the Academy Awards as a special guest presenter.

weaselzippers

America’s ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries may be stirring anger across the West, but in the Arab world the move has received some more surprising responses.
In a series of tweets, Dubai’s Head of General Security, Dhahi Khalfan this morning expressed his support for President Trump’s “Muslim ban”.
“We completely support Trump in his ban on entry to those who may cause a breach in America’s security.”
Previous US administrations have embraced all the wanted men of the Arab world and those classified as terrorists… Trump what you’re doing is right.
Khalfan, who has a following 1.5 million on his official Twitter account, also wrote that it was America’s right to “ban whoever they want to ban”. Emirati passport holders are not included in the executive order that Trump signed on Saturday, suspending visas for travellers from several Arab nations including Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen.

Flashback: Democrats Tried To Block Thousands Of Vietnam War Refugees, Including Orphans

weaselzippers

What was the difference? Escaping communism doesn’t resonate with Democrats. Notice how there was no outrage about Obama stopping Cuban refugees from entering.
Via Daily Caller:
Despite today’s outrage over President Donald Trump’s refugee executive order, many liberals in 1975 were part of a chorus of big name Democrats who refused to accept any Vietnamese refugees when millions were trying to escape South Vietnam as it fell to the communists.
They even opposed orphans.
The group, led by California’s Gov. Jerry Brown, included such liberal luminaries as Delaware’s Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, former presidential “peace candidate” George McGovern, and New York Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman.

Sen Dianne Feinstein To Introduce 2 Obstructionist Bills In Response To Trump's Ban

 More news camera posturing.

 weaselzippers

ISIS just got a new BFF.
Via The Hill:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) will introduce two bills on Monday in response to President Donald Trump’s executive action on immigration and refugees.
“The first bill immediately rescinds the order. The second limits executive authority under the Immigration and Nationality Act,” the Judiciary Committee ranking member wrote on Twitter Sunday.
Trump on Friday signed an executive order calling for a 90-day ban on nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States. The order also includes a 120-day halt on admitting refugees and an indefinite pause on admitting refugees from Syria.

Trump and Merkel Agree: UN Members Must Pay Their Fair Share

weaselzippers

About time.
Via Reuters:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. President Donald Trump underscored the importance of the NATO alliance and vowed to work more closely together to combat terrorism and militancy, the two leaders said in a joint statement on Saturday.
Merkel and Trump spoke by telephone on Saturday about NATO, the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, their ties to Russia and the conflict in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement approved by both countries.
“The leaders recognized that NATO must be capable of confronting 21st century threats and that our common defense requires appropriate investment in military capabilities to ensure all allies are contributing their fair share to our collective security,” Merkel and Trump said in the statement.
Trump accepted Merkel’s invitation to attend a summit of G20 industrialized countries in Hamburg in July, and said he looked forward to welcoming Merkel to Washington soon. Germany is chairing the G20 group this year.[…]
The language on NATO came after Trump called the alliance “obsolete”, but it highlighted the need for reforms and updates.
Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members such as Germany that do not spend 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on their militaries.
Merkel has said Germany will work to increase its defense spending – now at 1.19 percent of GDP – but also warned that it would take time to achieve the goal.
Trump has also said Merkel made a “catastrophic mistake” by allowing more than a million refugees, mostly Muslims fleeing war in the Middle East, to come to Germany.

Evoking Reagan and Thatcher: May Hails New UK-U.S. Special Relationship

weaselzippers

Back to a better time.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Evoking the closeness of U.S. President Ronald Reagan and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May and Donald Trump shared a “warm conversation” at lunch on Friday to cement their own “special relationship”, a source in May’s team said.
May’s visit to the United States, the first by a foreign leader since Trump was inaugurated as president, has been hailed by her aides as a resounding success, one, they say, that has strengthened her hand in divorce negotiations with the EU.
A statement from May’s office said Trump pledged to ensure that the trade arrangements that Britain currently has with the U.S. through its membership of the European Union will continue in place the moment it leaves the bloc.
It was not clear how Trump’s aides viewed the meeting on Friday when the two leaders held talks and then had a lunch of baby iceberg salad with blue cheese and braised beef shortribs, but the UK delegation saw the visit as a triumph.
“They talked a lot about Thatcher and Reagan, and both agreed it was one of the most successful political relationships ever,” the source in May’s team said. “Trump went on to say that he always looked up to Reagan and said that he wanted their relationship to be even better than that one.”
Ties between Britain and the United States struck a highly personal tone under Thatcher and Reagan in the 1980s, with the image of them dancing at a ball at the White House epitomising the trans-Atlantic “special relationship”

More On The Biological Evidence For "Mental Illness"

Dr Phil Hickey

On January 10, 2017, I put up a post titled The Biological Evidence for “Mental Illness”. It was published simultaneously on Mad in America. The post was a response to an earlier comment from Carolina Partners in Mental Healthcare PLLC, which included the assertion “mental illnesses have a long history of biological evidence.” In my January 10 article, I challenged this assertion and pointed out that no such evidence existed. The article generated some comments, most of which were favorable. There was one comment, however, from Michael, who asserted:

“Your rebuttal that there are no scientific studies to these cases can be dismissed with a quick google search.”

In my response to Michael, I asked him to cite me some references to support this assertion. On January 15, Michael wrote back citing three studies: the first on the neurobiology of depression; the second on the neurobiology of “schizophrenia”; and the third on the neurobiology of “bipolar disorder”.

I examined these studies, and started to draft a response to Michael, but as I was writing, I realized that the subject matter warranted a wider audience and needed to be put up as a post. This is not because the studies cited are particularly compelling. As we shall see below, they are not. But rather, because what has happened here is something that occurs routinely in these debates. Psychiatry proponents claim there is evidence to support their position that “mental illnesses” are caused by biological malfunctions – but when pressed for references, they either don’t respond at all, or they dish up the kind of references cited by Michael.

Flashback: Obama Stopped Immigration From Iraq For 6 Months After Terrorists Mistakenly Allowed In

weaselzippers

But that was cool because it was Obama.

Via ABC:
Several dozen suspected terrorist bombmakers, including some believed to have targeted American troops, may have mistakenly been allowed to move to the United States as war refugees, according to FBI agents investigating the remnants of roadside bombs recovered from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The discovery in 2009 of two al Qaeda-Iraq terrorists living as refugees in Bowling Green, Kentucky — who later admitted in court that they’d attacked U.S. soldiers in Iraq — prompted the bureau to assign hundreds of specialists to an around-the-clock effort aimed at checking its archive of 100,000 improvised explosive devices collected in the war zones, known as IEDs, for other suspected terrorists’ fingerprints.
“We are currently supporting dozens of current counter-terrorism investigations like that,” FBI Agent Gregory Carl, director of the Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center (TEDAC), said in an ABC News interview to be broadcast tonight on ABC News’ “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline”.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many more than that,” said House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul. “And these are trained terrorists in the art of bombmaking that are inside the United States; and quite frankly, from a homeland security perspective, that really concerns me.
As a result of the Kentucky case, the State Department stopped processing Iraq refugees for six months in 2011, federal officials told ABC News – even for many who had heroically helped U.S. forces as interpreters and intelligence assets. One Iraqi who had aided American troops was assassinated before his refugee application could be processed, because of the immigration delays, two U.S. officials said. In 2011, fewer than 10,000 Iraqis were resettled as refugees in the U.S., half the number from the year before, State Department statistics show.

Lawsuits Against Trump On 'Immigration Ban' Will Fail Fast

weaselzippers

Jimmy Carter set the precedent.
Via Law Newz:
Council American-Islamic Relations announced an intention to sue President Donald Trump over his executive order banning most immigrants from Syria, and other countries that lack certain vetting standards and have issues with terrorism. Overnight, refugees who were in the air on the way to the United States are now being detained, and have also filed legal actions. The ban is perceived by some as a partial Muslim ban. Either way, at any trial, the law supports Trump’s order, and CAIR or others are likely to lose, completely, conclusively and quickly.
Liberal lawyer critics of Trump are making a habit of losing in their appeal to any branch other than elections — lost recount lawsuits, lost elector lawsuits, lost Russia-conspiracy derived lawsuits. Now, get ready to add lost emolument lawsuits and lost immigration lawsuits.
The Constitution gives Congress and the President exclusive, plenary control over immigration. This is how both Carter and Obama could single out various states or beliefs to exclude migrants on that basis, as both did.
First, the Constitution gives Congress the right to determine naturalization, and Congress gives the President express power to do as he did. Section 1182 of Title 8 directs the President can “by proclamation” suspend entry of “all aliens or any class of aliens” as the President “may deem appropriate” whenever the President merely “finds” any such alien group “would be detrimental” to the interests of the United States.

California To Give Lawyers To illegal Alien Students To Stop Deportations

Paging Jeff Sessions.  Paging Jeff Sessions.

weaselzippers

Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California system, eagerly spends the taxpayer’s money to defend people who are breaking the law just by being in California. As of 2013, illegal aliens were costing California taxpayers $25.3 billion per year, or $2,370 per household headed by a U.S. citizen.
Via Washington Times:
The University of California will provide lawyers to any of its illegal immigrant students who get detained by agents, system President Janet Napolitano said Friday.
She said the assistance won’t extend to their family members, but if any students get snared as President Trump calls for stiffer enforcement, the taxpayer-funded school system will ensure they get help as they go through deportation proceedings.
“We will supply them with a lawyer,” she said at a forum sponsored by the Migration Policy Institute.
Ms. Napolitano, who was President Obama’s first Homeland Security secretary before becoming president of one of California’s public college systems, said illegal immigrants with lawyers do much better in their deportation cases than those without.
California is among the most generous states to illegal immigrant students. It already offers in-state tuition for illegal immigrants who attended state high schools, and also has a loan program designed to provide money that the migrants would have been eligible for from the federal government, but for their legal status.
Gov. Jerry Brown, however, has proposed phasing out an assistance program for middle-class families — drawing fire from those who say the state shouldn’t be prioritizing illegal immigrants over legal residents.

New U.N. Ambassadore Nikki Haley: Time To Show Our Strength, 'We're Taking Names' of Opposition

weaselzippers

The President has most likely given her the task of putting together a list of the various U.N. programs that we need to defund immediately. I hope she starts with anything that says “Palestinian” on it.
Via The Washington Times:
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — New U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley arrived at the United Nations Friday announcing a new way the U.S. does business: The Trump administration’s goal is to show U.S. strength, speak out, and defend its allies — and as for countries opposing America, “We’re taking names.”
The former South Carolina governor said the United States will respond “accordingly” to opponents.
Haley spoke to the news media immediately after she walked into U.N. headquarters for the first time, saying “it’s a thrill to be here” and declaring that at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, “You are gonna see a change in the way we do business. It’s no longer about working harder, it’s about working smarter.”
In the halls of U.N. headquarters, the Trump administration’s approach to the 193-member world organization has been a subject of non-stop diplomatic discussion, speculation and concern.
The United States is a permanent veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, the U.N.’s most powerful body, and pays 22 percent of its regular budget and over 28 percent of the costs of its far-flung peacekeeping operations.
Haley said President Donald Trump wants her to put “fresh eyes” on the United Nations.
“Everything that’s working we’re going to make it better,” she said. “Everything that’s not working we’re going to try to fix, and anything that seems to be obsolete and not necessary we’re going to do away with.”
In blunt language, with none of the diplomatic nuances characteristic of discussions here, Haley outlined the new U.S. approach to the United Nations.
“Our goal with the administration is to show value at the U.N., and the way that we’ll show value is to show our strength, show our voice, and have the backs of our allies and make sure that our allies have our back as well,” Haley said.
“For those that don’t have our back we’re taking names,” she said. “We will make a point to respond to that accordingly. But this is a time of strength. This is a time of action. This is a time of getting things done.”

Trump Nominates Army Vet Turned Business Man For NAVY Secretary

weaselzippers

Time to rebuild the Navy instead of changing the duty uniform.
Via Military Com:
President Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated financier and former Army Reserve officer Philip Bilden to be the next secretary of the Navy, saying his business experience would aid him in rebuilding the naval fleet from “its lowest point … in decades.”
Bilden has been widely rumored in recent days as Trump’s pick for the job, a surprise to many who expected former congressman J. Randy Forbes to receive the nomination.
Bilden recently retired as co-founding member and senior adviser of HarbourVest Partners, a private equity investment management firm managing more than $42 billion in assets, according to a White House announcement. He joined the firm in 1991, and became a founding member in 1997 during a management buyout with the predecessor company. In 1996, he moved to Hong Kong to establish the company’s presence in Asia, according to the release.
In the Army, he served as a military intelligence officer, receiving his commission in 1986 following participation in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps while at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He rose to the rank of captain and worked in detachments supporting the Defense Intelligence Agency, then resigned his commission in 1996 to relocate to Hong Kong for HarbourVest.
Bilden has also served on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations, including several focused on the military. He is on the board of directors of the United States Naval Academy Foundation and the board of trustees of the Naval War College Foundation, serving there as the chairman of the Center for Cyber Conflict studies, according to the announcement.

EPA Employees Given "Dealing With Change" Counseling Post Trump Win

Junk Medicine/Junk Political Agenda.

BY:

Amidst employees in tears following the election of Donald Trump, the Environmental Protection Agency is offering counseling sessions on “dealing with change.”

Axios obtained slides from one of the 45-minute seminars, entitled, “Feeling pressured? Worried about change at EPA?”

Topics included “How to deal with change,” “How do you keep your composure and make better decisions under pressure?” “How can you spend your energy more wisely—and have more as a result?” and “How do you recognize and eliminate harmful habits that cause you stress?”

The agency’s Employee Counseling and Assistance Program held the sessions, which also covered “How can you stop yourself from getting hurt and/or angry?”

A spokesperson for the EPA told Axios that the counseling was part of regular training available to employees, and that “dealing with change” was “just one of the more recent ones that were offered.”
EPA employees are still coming to work in tears more than two months after Trump’s victory.

It appears not all EPA employees are distraught that a Republican is now in the White House. One EPA employee reached out to the Washington Free Beacon to say he disagrees with the coworkers he has witnessed crying at work, saying, “There’s at least one EPA employee who’s absolutely thrilled to have Trump in office.”

Economy Slows To 1.9% Growth In Obama's Last Months

Any economic health we may feel now isn’t coming from Obama…
Via Marketwatch:
The U.S. economy’s expansion slowed in the fourth quarter, and annual growth failed to reach 3% for an 11th straight year, reflecting the huge hurdles the Trump administration faces in trying to speed up a 7½-year-old expansion.
Gross domestic product, the official score card for the economy, expanded at a 1.9% annual clip from October to December, the Commerce Department said. That’s a marked drop from a 3.5% growth rate in the third quarter and below the 2.2% MarketWatch-compiled consensus.
In early trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.06% was little changed. The Dow finished at a record high Thursday, however, and is now up 25% over the last 52 weeks.
For the full year, the U.S. grew just 1.6%, compared with its 2.6% clip in 2015. It was the weakest performance since 2011. The last time the U.S. topped 3% growth — the historical average is 3.3% — was in 2005.

Trump Official: We're Going To Cut The EPA In Half

weaselzippers

During the 2013 “government shut-down”, 96% of EPA employees were furloughed as “nonessential”. Cutting that job-killing agency by 50% would just be a good start.

Via Daily Caller:
The former leader of President Donald Trump’s EPA transition team said Thursday he expects the president to slash the agency’s budget and staff.
Myron Ebell, the director of the Center for Energy at free market group Competitive Enterprise Institute, told reporters that Trump is considering reducing by magnitudes the agency’s workforce. It currently stands at 15,000 employees nationwide.
“Let’s aim for half and see how it works out, and then maybe we’ll want to go further,” Ebell said, referring to his wish to see the EPA slashed by at least half. He left Trump’s transition team last week, but was at one time on the president’s short list to head the agency.
Half of the EPA’s budget is transferred to state and local areas to update infrastructure projects and environmental cleanup efforts. Ebell, who is a long-time EPA critic and climate skeptic, said the cuts would likely fall on the remaining half of the agency’s budget, which supports a portion of federal employees.
“President Trump said during the campaign that he would like to abolish the EPA, or ‘leave a little bit,’” he said. “I think the administration is likely to start proposing cuts to the 15,000 staff, because the fact is that a huge amount of the work of the EPA is actually done by state agencies.”

ObamaCare Architect: Actually, Our Law was NEVER INTENDED TO HELP EVERYONE

After orchestrating a relentless campaign of deception about the law he designed, established liar Jonathan Gruber and his fellow propagandists have since made a series of admissions about Obamacare that undercut the mendacious sell-job he helped pioneer. Gruber stated privately, on several occasions, that his future analysis of the legal battle over state-based exchanges and subsidy eligibility would be dishonest, conceding the core argument of those anti-Obamacare lawsuits. Another Obamacare architect, Zeke Emanuel, finally confessed that people really couldn't necessarily keep their doctors and plans -- and that maybe the law wasn't especially "affordable" after all. Now here's Gruber sparring with Tucker Carlson last night, tossing another key Obamacare marketing slogan overboard. Democrats promoted their partisan scheme as a win/win panacea that would benefit everybody. No more:

Mental Health First Aid: Another Psychiatric Expansionist Tool

Dr Phil Hickey

On December 25, 2016, the Baltimore Sun published an excellent article titled Drug companies prey on children, by Patrick D. Hahn, PhD.  Dr. Hahn is an affiliate professor of biology at Loyola University, Maryland.  Here are some quotes:

“I recently attended Youth Mental Health First Aid Training at a local public school. It was an eye-opening experience.”

“Youth Mental Health First Aid Training, sponsored by the National Council for Behavioral Health, is intended to enable teachers, parents and others in contact with young people to identify potential ‘mental illnesses’ in order to facilitate early detection and treatment by our mental health care system. My fellow attendees were surprisingly open about their own experiences with that system. One mentioned that her son became manic after being diagnosed for ADHD. Another said that both she and her roommate became bipolar after being diagnosed for depression. Neither our facilitators nor anyone else present pointed out that mania and bipolar disorder are toxic effects of medications commonly prescribed for ADHD and depression.”

“Our training manual didn’t say anything about this either, although it did claim that depression is caused by a deficiency of serotonin — a fable that by now has become as discredited as the phlogiston theory of chemistry. It also stated that mental health interventions are ‘evidence-based’ and ‘scientifically tested’ — neglecting to mention that much of that evidence is put forth by drug companies who have a fiduciary duty to do everything they can to maximize sales of their products.”

“So is all this a scheme to push more drugs to more kids? The 2013/2014 annual report for the National Council for Behavioral Health, titled ‘A Legacy of Excellence and Impact,’ gives us a hint. It lists the organization’s supporters as including the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) along with no fewer than 12 different drug companies. Would these folks be ponying up the cash if they weren’t confident this program would increase sales? And do the parents and teachers who attend the council’s training program — no doubt with the best intentions in the world — realize that they are essentially sitting through an eight-hour infomercial bought and paid for by the drugmakers?”

“One out of 13 American children between the ages of 6 and 17 has taken a psychotropic medication within the last six months, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Meanwhile, youth suicide rates are at their peak going back at least as far back as 1999, while the number of children receiving disability benefits for mental illness is at an all-time high.”

Please take a look at Dr. Hahn’s article, and pass it on.  Mental Health First Aid is not a good thing.  Rather, it is just another psychiatric expansionist tool.

President Trump To Sign Executive Order Dramatically Reducing Funding Of United Nations

weaselzippers

United States sovereignty has been eroded by every President and every Congress after Ronald Reagan. President Trump’s defunding of the U.N. will be a good start to restoring American sovereignty and prestige around the world.

Via The Independent:

Donald Trump is preparing executive orders that would dramatically reduce US funding of the United Nations, as well as other international organisations that do not meet certain criteria.

The executive order plans to repeal certain multilateral treaties too, officials told the New York Times, which would likely include treaties on climate change.

The first order, called “Auditing and Reducing US Funding of International Organisations”, will take away funding for any United Nations agency or international body that meets criteria, including: organisations that give full membership to the Palestinian Authority or Palestine Liberation Organisation; support abortion and any group that circumvents sanctions on Iran or North Korea.

Funding will be taken away from any organisation that is “controlled or substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism” or is behind the persecution of marginalised groups or systematic violation of human rights.

The order has singled out peacekeeping, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Population Fund. The UNPFA targets violence against women, fights to keeps childbirth and abortion, where it is legal, safe, and was a key presence in safeguarding women in Haiti following Hurricane Matthew.

The order demands decreasing US funding towards international organisations by at least 40 per cent. Mr Trump has included the International Criminal Court here, yet the US currently pays nothing to the ICC.

If this order is signed, it would essentially decimate a global peacekeeping operation which is present in 16 countries.

Earlier reports revealed that Congress was planning legislation to stop funding the UN after it voted to condemn Israeli settlement building in the Occupied Territories.

President Trump dismissed the UN last December as a “club” for people to “have a good time”.

Surprise: Bay Area Restaurants Disappear After Minimum Wage Hike

Well, . . . and well again, . . . . at Least they're 'mentally healthy'.

weaselzippers

The reality of cause and effect continues to escape Governor Moonbeam and the California General Assembly.

Ed; Couldn't find their own ass with both hands in a room with Floodlights.

Via Breitbart:

Restaurants are rapidly going out of business in the Bay Area, after San Francisco passed a $15 minimum wage law in 2014 and the State of California followed suit in 2016. Yet the media are struggling to make the connection between high minimum wages and restaurant closures.

The East Bay Times, for example, asked Tuesday: “What’s behind the spate of recent Bay Area restaurant closures?” [Editor’s note: The East Bay Times article says that 60 Bay Area restaurants have closed since September, 2016] It barely mentioned new minimum wage laws, brushing them aside as if they were largely insignificant.

It is true, of course, that merely because one thing follows another does not prove that the second was caused by the first. The “post hoc, ergo propter hoc” fallacy that is familiar to first-year economics students would apply to this case as well. Yet that does not mean the prior factor should be excluded as a cause. But that is largely what the Times seems to have done, even though the closure of businesses and the loss of restaurant jobs is exactly what critics of the minimum wage hikes predicted.

There are certainly a variety of factors contributing to the squeeze in the restaurant industry. One is rising rents, as technology companies move from suburban Silicon Valley to the cities, lured by tax incentives and by the desire to be closer to workers who opt for urban lifestyles and dislike long commutes. Another factor is that many tech companies are installing their own cafeterias in order to keep employees on the premises. That means less dining out — and a smaller restaurant customer base.
